The first time I made contact to see Mr Whitwell was through his secretary, Angie, who will always do her best to get you an appointment to see him or answer any questions if she can, I arranged to see him at the end of 2020 . Going private it doesn't necessarily mean that you will be seen immediately, as his specialist skills are also needed within the NHS. Mr Whitwell called us into his small but inviting room, I really didn't know what to expect or in fact if he could help me, but after researching the internet I was hopeful he might. He gently asked me to explain how he could help and through the tears I began to tell my story, as it is quite a long one, I will keep it somewhat brief. Over 18 months ago I'd had a hip replacement by another surgeon privately and was left in a wheelchair for six weeks after the operation, having sustained a fracture to the femur during surgery. This didn't cause the problem, but when I tried to get back to my normal activities it was impossible to put my foot to the floor without pain in my thigh. Over the following months I could not go through a minute in the day without chronic pain, some people, I'm sure, will relate to the shell of a person you become. It drives you to dark irrational thoughts, a tiredness where you can't think straight from the exhaustion of waking up night after night in pain, eventually I ended up calling the Samaritans and telling them I didn't want to live anymore, from being an active well-adjusted woman I was now having to depend on a wheelchair to get around. Mr Whitwell with his kind sympathetic eyes over the top of the covid mask just listened, when he eventually spoke, he said from the type of pain I described I could be looking at hip revision surgery but did not say this lightly. There would be many tests and scans to justify such major surgery and obviously he could not give me an answer at the first appointment. The appointments for the tests came through without hesitation, in themselves they were tiresome, but I fully understood, necessary. When we saw him next, he was armed with all the results and said with a confidence only a prestigious surgeon could give, that I required hip revision surgery and gave me a ninety percent assurance that the operation would be successful. It was not said in an ostentatious or presumptuous manner, but with humility, showing more the faith in his abilities and expertise as a surgeon from previous extraordinary accomplishments. Yes, the surgery was hard to go through but from all the doctors, nurses, physios and all other precious individuals at the Nuffield Hospital they made me grow stronger and stronger each day, both mentally and physically. I was taken into the hospital in my wheelchair but following the operation and with two crutches I was able to walk out of it with a happiness and in the ultimate belief of a bright future ahead. What do you say about a man who saves your life, there simply aren't the words to convey, but I will be eternally grateful to Mr Whitwell and his unparalleled gift as a surgeon.
