I first met my ENT consultant, Zaid Awad, when he broke the devastating news, after a biopsy, that I had cancer of the soft palate. You can imagine how scared and nervous I was. He explained the various options and possible outcomes of each possible treatment scenario. Throughout, he talked to me in a way I could understand, didn’t use jargon and didn’t talk down to me or insult my intelligence. Of course I did my homework and internet search straight after our initial meeting and felt immediately reassured when I found out that I was in the hands of a brilliant and experienced specialist who is one of the very few accredited professionals to perform trans-oral robotic surgery (TORS) in the UK. He went out of his way and even did a second biopsy, on a day when he wasn’t even supposed to be operating. After getting the results of the biopsy and all the necessary tests and scans, Mr Awad was confident that the tumour was highly resectable. He arranged and carried out the surgery unbelievably quickly and personally intervened when my operation was going to be postponed because there were no available beds in recovery at St Mary’s, Paddington. It couldn’t have got worse really as the next available slot would have been two weeks later and I was really getting nervous and scared that by then the cancer would not be operable. Again it was Mr Awad who insisted on doing the robotic surgery there and then and personally arranged for me to be transported to Charing Cross hospital for recovery immediately afterwards. I had his reassurance with emails and also on the phone before I was discharged that the tumour has been removed. Later, the pathology results confirmed the same: there were negative margins and the whole tumour was out.
