After qualifying from Charing Cross Hospital, Mr Bates took junior posts in ophthalmology and neurosurgery at The Middlesex Hospital. He worked in the Retina Unit at Moorfields Eye Hospital, then took a registrar post in the Liverpool Eye Hospital, completing his training in 1992 as Senior Registrar at Birmingham and Midland Eye Hospital, with a period of elective training in Retina as Hon Lecturer to Liverpool University.
Mr Richard Bates was appointed Consultant to Bucks Hospitals NHS Trust in 1992 and worked there and at Milton Keynes University Trust Eye Unit.
He has been in private practice in General Ophthalmology since 1993.
