I appreciated how Dr von Arx took the time to review my case history and carried out diagnostic checks before advising as to my options to proceed with treatment.

I first went to see Otto with back and leg pain that was affecting every aspect of my life. I was having a particularly bad day that day too. Otto was kind, clear, informative and thorough. He didn't pressurise me into any decision, but allowed productive discussion in a caring and professional environment. I opted for surgery and throughout the entire process he has consistently been a pleasure to deal with. I would not hesitate to recommend him.

I am very pleased to be Mr. Otto von Arx's patient. He explained me very clearly pre the operation which are the surgical treatment options to mend my spinal stenosis. Post operation the same, he came to the ward to explain how he had performed the operation. He also spoke to my partner by telephone and gave him the fully explanation. Later he sent a letter to explain to me the performed operation. He did not discharge me until he felt I was safe to go home. I am pleased to notice the nerve pain has disappeared, only feel the pain in the wound.

I had such wonderful care from Mr von Arx. His expertise and support have really helped me with ongoing back pain issues that I have had - he quickly identified the problem and gave me a treatment plan that has helped immensely already and he has also advised me on what to do at home to continue my recovery. When he carried out a procedure on me for the back pain, he put me at my ease, made sure that I understood the full process and explained the benefits and risks clearly to me. I am already feeling immense benefits and relief from the treatment he gave to me and have had good instructions from him on how to get my core stronger and keep myself free from pain in the long-term. I am very grateful to him.

Explanation

For the past several years I had experienced various lower back & leg pains that at times were limiting me in certain activities, including walking and particularly when playing golf. The problem could be in one leg or the other and would vary from day to day. For example I could experience a pain in the right thigh down to the knee and the next day it might be an issue in the left leg. My buttocks always felt week and legs felt heavy and I actually felt unstable at times. During the latter part of 2020 I became more ware of momentary jolts of pain in my left leg when walking and that became concerning to me. I also suffer from a burning sensation in my lower left leg and foot. This appears to have come about in 2013 as a result of a herniated disc that as far as I know resolved itself. As this had been a long-standing problem it is hoped that this may resolve in time. This however was not the prime reason for having an operation and if it does resolve itself then for me that's a bonus. Aside from this, and though I was still very mobile I just knew something was wrong with my lower half. I know I am old but I really felt old. Mr Von Arx had been seeing me over a period of 7-years and MRI's had shown spinal Stenosis at L4/5 level. Injections were initially tried but with moderate success. A Laminectomy appeared to be the last resort and it was agreed this should be done in February 2021. It is now 13-weeks since the operation and I could not be more pleased with the outcome. Absolutely none of the pains in the legs or buttocks (apart from foot problem which is manageable). Yes, I still can have some back-ache at times but we knew that all along, but who doesn't, especially after a round of golf or doing something strenuous but now I recover very quickly. My back can sometimes feel stiff when getting up in the mornings but that quickly eases off. Overall I am now more mobile, more flexible, more confident, more positive and far happier. I actually feel years younger and more capable. There are difficult moments after the operation, there are periods when you might doubt the benefits, but don't be too impatient. Take it easy but move frequently, walk frequently, buy an indoor treadmill if you cant walk outside. Two days after my op I am walking outside and on a treadmill. Your back will hurt but it gets better day by day. Once the dressing is removed and the wound pain subsides you then start to feel good. Get a good physio as these are invaluable. I arranged my first physio session 5 weeks after the op, maybe I could have done that sooner. They will give you stretching and core strengthening exercises. Just do them day after day after day and don't stop as this most definitely helps. They say it can take 3 to 6 months for a full recovery so I still have a while to go but I felt so good after 5-weeks that decided I to do a full round of golf just 6-weeks after the operation and I have been doing 2 rounds each week since and I walk the course, and unlike before the surgery I still have energy and don't hurt afterwards. For me the operation was as good as I had hoped for. Do I regret having the operation in February - YES I DO. I now wish I had had it earlier. I really don't think I could found a better surgeon or a better man than MR Von Arx. Over the years I had seen him, he always wanted to take a cautious approach to my problem and was certainly never in a hurry to do an operation. In the end I decided to take a chance and go for the op, particularly as the jolts in the left leg had occasionally been very strong indeed. I had total confidence in my surgeon and therefore there was no hesitation on my part in having the operation. What a good decision this this turned out to be as I now feel as good as I did at 40, though I am nearly 75. Brilliant job, thank you Otto for all of your advice and expertise.
