Mr Mokawem recently carried out a two-stage instrumented correction and spinal fusion to treat our 14-year-old daughter’s severe scoliosis. When my daughter and I first met him in clinic, we appreciated at once his kindly manner, professionalism and self-possession. The way that he listens with quiet attention and his thoughtful, measured responses that are never hurried. He explained things with just the right level of detail – enough that we could make informed decisions and know what to expect, but not so much as to overwhelm us. Our daughter particularly appreciated his way of addressing her directly, always respectfully – reminding her more than once that it was her decision as to whether to operate. We already had the measure of him, but it was reassuring to see, during the two-week hospital stay, that he is so revered by his colleagues who enthused about his exceptional skills as a surgeon but also of his thorough decency and integrity as a human being. They told us he would do right by her, and indeed he has, keeping her safe and preserving as much flexibility in her spine as possible. Spinal surgeons carry an immense burden of responsibility – proportional to our fear as parents - but Mr Mokawem transcends it with his unwavering meticulous competence, sangfroid and equanimity. Mr Mokawem has changed my life! I had been suffering from Scheuermann's disease (hyperkyphosis) for over 10 years which led me to a lot of self doubt and insecurity; preventing me from doing things I really enjoy i.e. swimming, outdoor sports etc. I was told by a family friend to look into surgery as that would potentially solve this issue and I'm so glad I went ahead with that. I was initially unsure as with any surgery, there are potential risks; let alone spinal surgery. I contacted several spinal consultants with many really trying to sell their services rather than really being there to help me. On my second visit I had to take an MRI scan to ensure that there were no complications and then went ahead with the required procedures a few weeks later. Today I stand 4cm taller and even though recovery is tough I couldn't be any happier with the result. Family and friends are absolutely shocked with how much taller I am and how normal my posture looks. I went to my GP practice nurse for her to see the wound a few days after discharge and she told me that she had "never seen an incision cut this neat and clean". Really telling on how skilled Mr.Mokawem really is. I'm grateful to you Mr. Mokawem. I don't think words can explain how low my body image was, the depression I went through seeing the excessive curvature I had on my spine and how you and Jeanette helped me get over this. Mr. Mokawem has changed my life for the better to a major degree. I needed lower lumber surgery and frankly viewed it with a degree of trepidation and some cynicism. His explanation of the procedure was clear and concise, although possibly I should have known more of the post operative climb back to good health. This was quite a traumatic procedure and recovery was relatively quick physically but somewhat slower psychologically. In fairness he warned me reasonable recovery would take around six months and full recovery around a year. Six months on, he appears to be spot on.

My name is Jonathan and I have seen Mr Mokawem in October 2021. I had spinal injections in October 2021 for a slipped disc. So Calm and kind, very reassuring and took the time to explain my options. He also took on board my needle phobia so that I was able to be put under with gas and air which made a big difference. I’m only 6 days post the surgery but already my neck is far more mobile and the shooting pain in my arm has gone. Could not be happier.
