It was a pleasure to meet you on Friday (also your team of doctors and nurses have been wonderful too). You gave me time and listened to me 'super'. As you know we've going away to a little house in Spain to celebrate our sapphire wedding anniversary looking forward to coming back after that for my results. Thank you again, have a lovely summer yourself.

It is now 7 months since my knee replacement operation, and I wanted to thank you so much for the brilliant job you did. I am now back doing all the things which kept me fit and put a smile on my face, and which I could not do with my arthritic knee: walking, dancing, yoga and going to the gym. You have given me back my physical fitness and my mental wellbeing. Before my operation I had also been having some back problems, largely because of the way I was talking, and these have practically cleared up too. Thank you

I was well aware I needed a hip replacement through a severe lack of mobility and constant pain. I couldn’t tie my laces, my wife and children and friends had to put my socks on for me and my sporting days were virtually over. Through a number of sources I was made aware of Mr Gambhir at wrightington hospital so I requested a consultation through my GP. A calm assuring warm professional personality, with clear knowledge and experience of what was best for me. At 47 years old , I felt I was too young for a total hip replacement and Mr Gambhir sensed my trepidation. We met on a number of occasions discussing various options, and eliminating those options that were technically inappropriate, had greater risk of failure or were prone to infection. Eventually I relented to the pain, the proposal for durability and longevity, was a titanium stem coated in ceramic so it would allow bone to grow into it to bond it, with a ceramic faced titanium femoral head , and ceramic lined acetabular. The head size was chosen to give me a good range of movement so I could potentially continue with martial arts training. As an airline pilot, I was concerned about recovery period, and if I’d ever get my medical back to continue flying. The operation was two hours long under a local spinal anaesthetic, and Mr Gambhir gave me a commentary during the operation. At 5.0 pm Saturday afternoon I was sat up eating in my hospital bed, just one hour after the operation was completed. I was walking weight on with crutches within days, I returned to flying within months, I now walk miles 5 miles a day, but comfortably more when I want, I have successfully completed two Dan gradings in karate, I am currently a third Dan black belt , this year I competed in the WUKF world karate

I have always been very fit and actively involved in a wide variety of sports, during my working life I was a P.E. teacher. I played rugby and cricket for local teams as well as badminton, squash and golf as leisure activities; I have skied regularly and have been a fell walker as I live in Cumbria. I am also a cyclist, averaging about 100 miles a week on my bike and completing challenges such as Coast to Coast rides and Lands End to John O’Groats. About eight years ago I started to experience pain in my hips after exercise, particularly activities with a high impact such as tennis, badminton and fell walking. As the pain levels increased I had to cut out many of the activities I enjoyed and had to take more and more pain killers. I saw my G.P. who arranged for X-rays, which revealed that I had no cartilage left in my hip joints with the only solution being total hip replacement. I did some research and asked to be referred to Wrightington Hospital with a view to having my hips replaced by the Anterior approach as this would mean less disruption to the muscles during surgery. I saw Mr Anil Gambhir and was immediately impressed by his caring, professional manner and his willingness to explain, in layman’s terms, the advantages and disadvantages of each procedure. My right hip was replaced in February 2015, followed by my left hip in October 2015; I followed the rehabilitation procedure to the letter and, once the post-operative pain had subsided, was delighted to be pain free for the first time in five years. Since the surgery I have resumed many of the activities which I had been forced to give up. I fell walk regularly and play golf four times a week as well as playing tennis and table tennis. I have also skied in the French Alps and completed three long distance cycle tours from Caen to Nice, Mizen Head to Malin Head in Ireland and the Rhine Cycleway from Andermatt in Switzerland to the North Sea. My new hips are so good I’ve forgotten that I’ve had replacement surgery and I have no hesitation in recommending Mr Anil Gambhir and his team at Wrightington Hospital.

Dear Mr Gambhir, I just wanted to put on record how fantastic I feel and how amazing my new hips are. 6 months post op and I’m swimming, walking, playing football with my grandchildren etc and, best of all, I’m pain-free. I know I’m due to see Richard for an annual review in July but did not want to wait to say a huge, huge Thank you.
