Miss Theodora Pissanou is a consultant surgeon who specialises in hepatobiliary diseases, sarcoma surgery and segmental liver transplantation. Despite being Greek, she is the first woman in the UK to be appointed as a consultant surgeon in liver transplantation.
Owing to her extensive medical experience and expertise, she has specialised in all aspects of liver surgery including hepatocellular carcinoma, colorectal liver metastases liver adenomas, gallstone disease, laparoscopic surgery, complex hernia surgery and emergency surgery.
After graduating from Semmelweis university in Budapest in 1996, she joined the University of Athens where she completed her training in General surgery in 2004. Later in her career, she came to the UK where she trained in HPB, Liver Transplantation and sarcoma surgery, in Birmingham, Newcastle and The Royal Free Hospital in London, where she joined the Sheila Sherlock Liver Unit as a consultant surgeon in 2011.
Her main research interests are in organ preservation for transplantation and liver regeneration. Added to this, she also has a special interest in promoting organ donation and increasing live donor liver transplantation in the UK. Beyond her clinical interests, Miss Pissanou is an active member of many scientific surgical societies including IHPBA, ILTS, ESOT & BTS.Â
