About Frenchay Brain Injury Rehabilitation Centre

Frenchay Brain Injury Rehabilitation Centre in Bristol specialises in the assessment, rehabilitation, and therapy of those over 16 with complex physical and cognitive impairments, challenging behaviours, and neuropsychiatric disorders resulting from a brain injury. The two units (Frenchay BIRU South and North) are led by a multidisciplinary team that work together to ensure patients meet their personalised, clearly defined goals and improve their quality of life. The Frenchay BIRU team is led by Dr Angus Graham (rehabilitation consultant and medical director) and consists of qualified nurses, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, speech and language therapists, and clinical psychologists.

The centre comprises 52 bedrooms split across two units, with two independent flats as well as a high dependency ward. Service users also have access to therapy kitchens, a hydrotherapy pool, two gymnasiums, five large day rooms, private landscaped gardens, as well as an outdoor area with different surfaces for walking. Two minibuses and a car are also available for day outings and appointments.

Patients treated at the centre include those with complex physical and cognitive difficulties resulting from conditions such as a brain tumour, complex stroke, inflammatory and infective conditions, subarachnoid haemorrhage, or traumatic brain injury. The team a highly qualified and experienced in the management of people with PEGS and patients requiring SMART (Sensory Modality Assessment and Rehabilitation Technique) assessment. In addition, those detained under the Mental Health Act or under a DoLS order may also be treated at the centre.

The therapists here are brilliant including students. Majority of nurses brilliant , support workers too, but some others can impolite, a few let the side down .
