Dr Shane O’Regan is a Consultant Medical Ophthalmologist and retinal specialist on the Irish Medical Council’s Specialist Register. He looks after adults with a wide range of eye problems, with a particular focus on:
- Glaucoma and raised eye pressure, including Selective Laser Trabeculoplasty (SLT) to reduce eye pressure and often reduce the need for drops
- Retinal problems such as macular degeneration, diabetic eye disease and vein occlusions
- Ocular surface disorders (dry, gritty, watery or red eyes, blepharitis) and minor procedures such as styes and eyelid cysts
Originally from Limerick, Dr O’Regan studied at Trinity College Dublin (undergraduate and master’s degree) before completing his medical degree at the University of Limerick Graduate Entry Medical School. He worked in acute hospital medicine prior to undertaking six years of specialist ophthalmology training through the Irish College of Ophthalmologists National Clinical Training Programme.
After Higher Specialist Training, he completed a Fellowship in Medical Retina and Uveitis at Bristol Eye Hospital, one of the UK’s leading centres for retinal and inflammatory eye disease. There he developed advanced skills in managing complex retinal conditions, intravitreal injections, retinal imaging and ophthalmic laser treatments, which he now provides in his clinics.
Dr O’Regan is a Fellow of the European Board of Ophthalmology and, in 2025 at the EURETINA congress in Paris, was awarded the European Subspecialist Diploma in Retina following successful completion of the Board’s subspecialist examination. He is an active member of EURETINA, the Irish College of Ophthalmologists, the UK & Éire Glaucoma Society and the European Glaucoma Society.
He aims to offer clear explanations and practical treatment plans so that patients understand their condition and feel confident about their care.

I have had severe dry eye for years and since I started my treatment with Shane I can honestly say it has been a game changer for me personally. I would recommend anyone with any concerns around dry eye to visit him.
I have Diabetes with some issues, so wanted a full examination and advice on how to prevent deterioration. Dr Shane was extremely knowledgeable and very approachable and both he and the nurse spent a lot of time examining all aspects of the eyes, so I felt very reassured and very happy with the agreed approach. The treatment facility is ultra modern and was very happy to hear that I can also attend in the Bon Secours in Limerick if preferred.

He was very thorough and explained everything in lay man's terms once he had his diagnosis made . He went through my mams treatment and made sure she understood what she had to do . I have been complaining for over 1 year about my eyes only to be told it was an allergy and given tablets for sane. He understood immediately that there was a much bigger problem never rushed me he listened and at the end he had found many problems which I am truly grateful for I cannot recommend him as much as I want to he made me feel as important as a much younger person.
