Dr Shih-Ern Yao is a gynaecological oncology surgeon based in Melbourne, Victoria who specialises in complex gynaecological conditions, and in particular, the management, treatment and prevention of gynaecological cancers and dysplasia (abnormal pre-cancerous cells).
Dr Yao completed his medical school training in Perth and spent a number of years gaining experience in a wide variety of different specialities before committing to specialist training in obstetrics and gynaecology. He undertook four years of obstetrics and gynaecology training at King Edward Memorial Hospital in Perth before moving to Melbourne where he completed his generalist training at Monash Health and gained fellowship with the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (RANZCOG) in 2016.
A further 6 years of subspecialist training in gynaecological oncology at the Queensland Centre for Gynaecological Cancer (Brisbane, QLD) and The Royal Marsden NHS Trust (London, UK) equipped Dr Yao with a wide surgical skill set encompassing all facets of women’s cancer surgery, with particular proficiency in advanced minimally invasive laparoscopic and robotic-assisted techniques.

Why did you join Doctify? What were your challenges and goals?
I was interested to gain insight into my patients’ experiences and to receive feedback on the care which I deliver. As a sole practitioner in the early stages of establishing my private practice, I view Doctify as a means to reflect, evaluate and improve on the support which I can provide my patients. Without the sounding board of a group practice or the same organic professional connections as someone who may have completed the majority of their training locally, Doctify is an essential tool in providing me a direct understanding about how I can continue to offer the best standard of care to women referred to my practice.
