Explanation

Jeremy Reynolds has been brilliant throughout my care. From first consultation and initial discussions he was able to confidently describe where he thought my pain was stemming from. This was then subsequently confirmed by an MRI. Once the MRI results were available, Jeremy Reynolds discussed my treatment options with me. He was very ethical in his approach. He made the risks clear and allowed me the time I needed to make my decision. His confident approach was very reassuring throughout. After some consideration, I opted to go ahead with surgery (decompression and discectomy). Jeremy and team that looked after me on the day of surgery were fantastic. The anaesthetist, Dr Simon Raby, was very reassuring and calming. The whole experience was positive and I felt safe throughout. I am absolutely delighted with the results of my surgery. I was out of bed within an hour of waking up from the general anaesthetic and the pain I was enduring was instantly gone. I can walk and stand pain free!!! It’s 7 days since my surgery and I am no longer relying on painkillers. Thank you to Jeremy and the team for your care.

Explanation

I rarely write reviews, but Jeremy Reynolds really is exceptional. I first developed problems with my lower back 18 months ago, when after having led an extremely active life – riding/running/hiking etc – I was unable to walk more than a very short distance due to excruciating Sciatic symptoms. I developed a stoop as I could not straighten my back or stand for more than a few minutes. Mr Reynolds wasted no time in getting to the heart of the matter and diagnosed spondylolisthesis. He first explored less radical treatment options including a cortisone injection before ultimately it became clear surgery was required. He carried out decompression surgery – and the results are, quite frankly, remarkable. It’s early days and I am now five weeks post-surgery but am already walking tall and with ease, no longer suffering from the debilitating pain that I had lived with prior to surgery. Mr Reynolds has a practical, no-nonsense approach, underpinned by a quiet, very genuine concern for his patients. I would not hesitate to recommend a consultation with Mr Reynolds to anyone who finds their back problems are preventing them from living life to the full.

Mr Reynolds could not have been less interested in my issue and pain if he had tried. I did not understand what he was explaining and when I questioned to try and understand, he acted as if I was asking a stupid question. I had to chase his secretary and finally got a referral letter for physio two months after the follow-up appointment. I would not recommend Mr Reynolds.

Reply from Jeremy Reynolds

I apologise that this was your experience. Given that we rarely receive a negative assessment or complaint I was able to assess who you were and contact you accordingly as per our conversation the other day. You found my demeanour disinterested and the correspondence resulting from the clinic appointments did not come to you without being chased. The former was clearly not my intention and I have investigated the failure in our comms. I have reviewed my letters (which I dictated in your presence). Whilst my demeanour may not have been to your liking the letters contain a comprehensive history detailing nuances of your pain, a well documented and comprehensive physical exam and appropriate imaging was obtained. On follow up and in the absence of a surgical target I then offered to refer you for a second opinion to a sports medicine physician which I duly did, adding that a pain management specialist was an alternative. I had not planned to send you to physio as I was yet to be convinced of the nature of your pain. I obviously also considered my explanation to that point inadequate hence seeking a non-spinal opinion as the spinal imaging was not helpful and pelvic imaging had changes requires expansion. I am obviously disappointed to receive a poor review and welcome the opportunity to improve areas of my practice. Whilst saddened that your experience was negative I was relieved to see that the objective aspects of the consultation were indeed professional, showed evidence of “interest”, explained well as could be expected my thoughts and a second opinion was sought. We have overhauled the secretarial approach to our communications and I will keep that area under close review. Without your feedback the weaknesses of that process were not obvious, so I am grateful for that. I wish you well in your ongoing attempts to get to the bottom of your pain and have it successfully treated All the best Jeremy

Good result for my multi level lumbar Laminectomy. Mr Reynolds took time to carefully consider and explain the options and possible outcomes. The only minor problem I had was with the wound which took 11 weeks to heal due to a reaction to to the stitches.
