I met Mr Braithwaite for the first time yesterday and I couldn't be happier with my consultation. I'm so glad my friends recommended him and I will be a patient for many years to come!

I was highly recommended to see Mr Braithwaite but was extremely disappointed with my overall experience. Undoubtedly, he is a very experienced clinician and has excellent clinical skills. He has provided me with a quick and efficient written clinical report, and yes, he is very gentle and descriptive during the clinical examination. This part was very reassuring! However, his interpersonal skills and patient management are very uncomfortable, patronising and condescending. I completely agree with another person's review who said: "Asking questions is seen as a bit of an annoyance, and he talks down and interrupts a lot". His office setting is dark, and everything from the start to the end feels unnatural and theatrical. I found the experience awful. He did not even shake my hand when I offered it to him. He called our discussion about what I wanted from the appointment a " negotiation" as if I was buying a bag. His approach upset me, and I felt choked and anxious. I brought my teenage daughter to meet a gynaecologist for the first time and hoped that we would become patients here. His staff nurse/ assistant spoke so quietly that I could not hear her. His PA, although she was bubbly and pleasant, had not even realised ( I hope) that she had breached the previous patient's medical confidentiality and told me in front of my 16-year-old daughter that the previous patient had a prolapse, which was the size of a tennis ball. She even told us, "You wouldn't want that, would you?" and made a face about it. I was utterly shocked at this as I saw the poor woman before me who would be shocked if she knew about this and probably very upset. I wondered what they might have said about me when I left. But before we left, Mr Braithwaite sarcastically told my daughter," I guess you will not be coming back." After we left his office and I paid not a small bill (£650), my daughter said he also made a face at her while he was having the "negotiation ", as if "I was too much for expressing myself". My daughter felt upset that I went through with my exam as she hated every second and thought it was awful, which upset her, too. She then said she would only ever see a female gynaecologist and someone who would understand what it is about being a woman and feeling vulnerable as a patient. I agree. We both left with a heavy feeling of distress. I cannot describe how disappointed and shocked I am at the lack of professionalism, the lack of a patient-centred approach and the gloomy general feel of the clinic. Never again.

My entire experience from booking a consultation to discussion of surgery options, the best way forward, and after care has been very positive. I found Mr Jeffrey Braithwaite to be a good and patient listener when I explained my symptoms, and an excellent communicator when discussing diagnosis and prognosis. From the consulting room right through to post-surgery, there was always the sense that I was under the care of a consultant for whom patient care is extremely important.
