Couples counselling could be emotionally draining at times. Some sessions genuinely felt like a workout, but in a good way. We started connecting with feelings we weren't really talking about or even noticing in our day to day relationship. There was something comforting about having someone there who was looking after the relationship rather than taking sides. It helped us see things from a fresh perspective and gave us space to talk about things differently. We also found it really grounding to understand the research behind relationships and to realise that lots of couples go through similar difficulties. There was a real sense of relief in knowing we weren't alone and that our relationship wasn't somehow broken. It was absolutely worth doing. I just wish we'd done it earlier.

I really valued being challenged to look at things from a different perspective, especially around not sharing how I was feeling. I started to recognise the part I was playing in some of the problems too. It was really helpful to break situations down with someone else and understand why certain things were triggering me when I hadn’t even realised it before. Some days were hard and it wasn’t always easy to talk about things or put myself out there and try something different, but I could see I was making progress. One of the biggest things I’ve taken from counselling is learning to find more safety and security within myself. I realised I don’t need a romantic relationship to give me that in the way I once thought I did. I’m also choosing to connect with people now rather than disconnecting when things feel difficult. That has been a really important change for me.

One of the biggest things I learnt was that the ways I'd survived in the past were actually messing up my present. I was trying to control everything because that's how I'd learnt to cope, but it was leaving me exhausted and anxious. Sean really helped me understand me and and gave me the confidence to get to know me and what i need

He’s kind, patient, understanding, and so easy to talk to. Every session felt comfortable and natural, almost like speaking with someone I could really trust, while still knowing I was being supported and guided professionally. I never felt judged. I always felt heard. The sessions helped me see things from a different perspective and gave me tools I still use in everyday life. There’s genuinely nothing I disliked about the experience.

I’ve really appreciated working with Sean. I don’t have many places in my life where I can just sit, talk openly, and actually feel heard so this space has become really important to me. It feels safe and comfortable, and I notice I can be myself here in a way I’m not always able to outside. The sessions help me make sense of things and see what’s really going on for me. I can feel myself making progress, even in small ways, and it’s a good feeling. I’m genuinely looking forward to where the work goes next.

Criticism in Relationships: What Monica Could’ve Said to Chandler

Criticism in Relationships: What Monica Could’ve Said to Chandler

In this short video, I explore how criticism—like saying “You always…”—can quietly erode connection in a relationship. Using a well-known scene from Friends, I show how Monica and Chandler’s dynamic reflects a common issue couples face. As a couples counsellor based in Swords I use the Gottman Method, I help partners move from blame to understanding through research-backed tools like the gentle start-up. If you’ve ever felt unheard or stuck in the same argument, this one-minute clip might just give you a new way forward.

Contempt in Relationships – How to Spot It and What to Do Instead (1-Minute insight)

Contempt in Relationships – How to Spot It and What to Do Instead (1-Minute insight)

In just 60 seconds, this video explains why contempt—eye-rolling, sarcasm, and emotional superiority—is the most destructive of the Gottmans’ Four Horsemen. Using a relatable moment from Friends, we show how contempt sounds, why it signals deep hurt, and what a healthier response looks like. As a couples counsellor trained in the Gottman Method, I guide partners to replace contempt with curiosity, respect, and genuine dialogue. If you’re noticing sarcasm or moral high ground creeping into your conversations, this video offers a quick first step toward change.

What Is Counselling? A new Video Series

What Is Counselling? A new Video Series

What Is Counselling? A New Educational Video Series Many people consider counselling for months, sometimes even years, before reaching out. One of the biggest reasons is uncertainty. What actually happens? Will I know what to say? Is counselling right for me? To help answer these questions, I've launched a new educational YouTube series called Understanding Counselling. In the first episode, I explain what counselling is, what it isn't, and why you don't need to have everything figured out before taking that first step. My hope is that this series makes counselling feel a little less intimidating and helps people make informed decisions about whether it's right for them. What question about counselling would you like me to answer next? Leave a comment below. There's a good chance someone else is wondering the same thing, and it may become the subject of a future episode.

Ireland’s Debate About AI Therapy Says More About Mental Health Services Than Technology | Sean Adams

There’s a lot of talk about AI therapy right now. But the bigger issue is what it reveals about mental health services in Ireland. People are turning to AI because it feels quick, private, and always available. That should make us pause. Because the real question isn’t whether AI can sound supportive. It’s whether people can access timely, human, skilled support when they need it most. In this article, I look at what the rise of AI therapy tells us about trust, access, and the future of counselling and psychotherapy in Ireland. #Counselling #Psychotherapy #MentalHealthIreland #AITherapy #TherapyAccess
