Dr Ion Cretu

Dr Ion Cretu is a Consultant in Gastroenterology, Hepatology and General Medicine at Naas General Hospital, County Kildare, where he has held a consultant appointment since January 2015. His practice covers a broad spectrum of digestive and liver conditions, with particular interests in advanced endoscopy, inflammatory bowel disease, chronic liver disease, irritable bowel syndrome and nutrition.

He graduated from the State Medical University in the Republic of Moldova in 1998, then completed postgraduate training in the UK and Ireland between 2003 and 2013. He completed specialist training in Gastroenterology and Hepatology in 2013, followed by an intensive year of advanced endoscopy training at the Mater Hospital, Dublin.

A distinctive part of Dr Cretu’s practice is intestinal ultrasound. He is a member of IBUS, the International Bowel Ultrasound Group, and has undertaken bowel ultrasound training in Copenhagen, Lüneburg and Milan. he is among the relatively small number of gastroenterologists in Ireland performing bowel ultrasound as a non-invasive assessment of the small and large bowel.

Dr Cretu manages a large cohort of patients with inflammatory bowel disease within a busy gastroenterology service. Care includes access to IBD clinics, IV biologic infusions, iron infusions, drug monitoring, bowel ultrasound, endoscopy, radiology and dietetic support, allowing treatment to be coordinated across multiple disciplines. Dr Cretu’s practice is particularly suited to patients who require careful diagnostic assessment, endoscopic investigation and long-term management of chronic gastrointestinal or liver disease. His use of bowel ultrasound adds a less-invasive option for monitoring selected patients, particularly those with inflammatory bowel disease.
