Dr Haytham Makki

Dr Haytham Makki is a Consultant Interventional Cardiologist with specialist expertise in complex coronary interventions and transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI). Currently practicing at Bon Secours Hospital Tralee, he graduated in medicine from the University of Gezira in 2001 before pursuing postgraduate cardiology training in Ireland, where he began his specialist registrar training in 2012. His training included rotations through University Hospital Galway, St Vincent’s University Hospital and St James’s University Hospital.

Between 2017 and 2020, Dr Makki completed advanced fellowships in complex coronary intervention and TAVI at Manchester Royal Infirmary, subsequently working as a Consultant Cardiologist there until 2022. His clinical practice encompasses the assessment and management of cardiovascular disease, with particular expertise in catheter-based coronary procedures and minimally invasive treatment of aortic valve disease. He also contributes to Ireland’s National Primary Percutaneous Coronary Intervention Service, which provides emergency intervention for patients experiencing acute myocardial infarction.

Alongside his interventional practice, Dr Makki has clinical interests in heart failure management and cardiac amyloidosis. His academic work includes research into transcatheter aortic valve replacement, procedural outcomes and the multidisciplinary decision-making involved in TAVI, reflecting his involvement in research examining techniques and outcomes in structural heart interventions.

Dr Makki also contributes to cardiovascular education and public awareness. He has delivered educational talks on heart disease, cardiovascular risk factors and the importance of prevention, with particular attention to differences in heart disease presentation and management between men and women.
