About Prof. Danny Cheriyan

Prof. Danny Cheriyan is a Consultant Gastroenterologist and Honorary Clinical Associate Professor at the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland (RCSI), with extensive expertise in advanced endoscopy and hepatobiliary medicine. He graduated with honours from RCSI in 2005 and completed specialist training in gastroenterology at Beaumont and St. Vincent’s Hospitals in Dublin. As a UCD Newman Scholar, he was awarded an MD for his research on colorectal cancer and angiogenesis.

Prof. Cheriyan further honed his skills through two prestigious fellowships: one in advanced endoscopy at the University of British Columbia, Canada, and another in hepatobiliary medicine at Duke University, USA. He joined Beaumont Hospital as a consultant gastroenterologist in 2016 and was appointed honorary clinical associate professor in 2023.

He has held several leadership roles, including Associate Clinical Director for Medicine and Clinical Lead for Endoscopy at Beaumont Hospital. He is also the Programme Director for International Residency Training at the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland (RCPI).

His clinical interests include endoscopic resection of gastrointestinal cancers (EMR and ESD), endoscopic ultrasound (EUS), ERCP for biliary and pancreatic disorders, and management of gastrointestinal bleeding. Prof. Cheriyan is widely published and recognised for his contributions to gastrointestinal medicine.

It was overall a very positive experience. The only slight criticism I have is that when I read my results file it mentioned that I had mild diverticulitis, however Dr Cheriyan made no mention of this or its significance in his discussion with me after the procedure. I would have liked more information on this diagnosis including advise as to how best to manage it.

I would have appreciated more time to talk through the implications of the endoscopy findings. I felt Prof Cheriyan was very approachable but three minutes at the end of a procedure to talk through results was not enough to think through some options with me. It also did not allow me to disclose current symptoms I am experiencing nor the change in medication which was suggested
