Mr Colin Peirce

Mr Colin Peirce is a Consultant General and Colorectal Surgeon with a notable career in pioneering robotic-assisted surgery within the Irish public health system. A first-class honours graduate of Trinity College Medical School, he pursued specialised fellowship training at the world-renowned Cleveland Clinic in Ohio. During his 2015–2016 fellowship, robotic colorectal surgery served as his primary clinical focus, laying the groundwork for introducing advanced robotic surgical techniques upon his return to University Hospital Limerick.

Since his consultant appointment in 2016, he has been at the forefront of clinical innovation, particularly in the introduction of Robotic Trans-Anal Minimally Invasive Surgery (TAMIS) to Ireland. This organ-preserving operative technique allows for the precise removal of early-stage rectal cancers and large polyps from within the lower bowel while leaving the organ fully intact, significantly reducing recovery times and eliminating the need for temporary or permanent stoma bags.

Beyond his clinical work, he is a dedicated contributor to surgical leadership and medical education, currently serving as Vice President of the Irish Hospital Consultants Association. In recognition of his pioneering contributions, he was chosen to deliver the prestigious 43rd annual Millin Lecture in 2020, entitled "Electrodes to Robots – Evidence-based change in surgical practice", highlighting the evolution and critical role of evidence-based technological advancement in modern Irish surgery.
