Ms Aisling Coen

Ms Aisling Coen is a Clinical Specialist Occupational Therapist in hands, plastics and reconstructive surgery at Galway University Hospitals, where she has worked full-time since December 2017. Her current role involves clinical work in hand therapy, outpatient orthopaedics, and a broad range of musculoskeletal and rehabilitation-related services. She works with patients after surgery for trauma injuries and also those referred directly by GPs for both acute and chronic issues. She also covers the minor injuries unit in Galway for hand related injuries.

Ms Coen has also worked for many years in inpatient services with advanced skills in critical care, amputations,  palliative care and a special interest in orthopaedics particularly to clients with injury to the spinal cord and/or brachial plexus. She completes housing assessments for increased mobility and independence at home, and helps people and their families apply for grants and funding for required adaptations.

Prior to this, she worked as an Occupational Therapist at Beaumont Hospital in 2017, with a focus on neurosurgery and rehabilitation. She previously held a post at King's College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust in London from 2016 to 2017, where she worked in stroke rehabilitation, surgery and orthopaedic care.

Ms Coen completed her BSc in Occupational Therapy at the University of Galway, graduating in 2015. She later completed a Postgraduate Certificate in Advanced Musculoskeletal Assessment and Practice at the University of Essex between 2023 and 2025. She is a member of the Irish Association of Hand Therapists (IAHT), British Association of Hand Therapists (BAHT) as well as the Association of Occupational Therapists of Ireland (AOTI).

Her clinical work focuses primarily on rehabiliation of the upper limb, medical legal reports and also assessment for housing adaptations for grant applications for the home.
