What is General Surgery?

General surgery incorporates an impressively broad variety of diseases and injuries to almost any area of the body that requires surgery. It covers a very wide range of procedures undertaken in an equally broad variety of settings, within different kinds of medical teams.

General surgery also covers things like support for terminally ill patients, including pain management and palliative care, advice about nutritional deficiencies, weakness and wasting in patients with malignant and chronic conditions like cancers, even counselling for end-of-life care and support making important life-end decisions. It also covers morbidly obese patients, namely the surgical and non-invasive treatments for weight loss called bariatrics.

What procedures can you find at a General Surgery clinic?

There’s a huge list of procedures found at a general surgery clinic. Here are some of the most common.

  • Ambulatory Phlebectomy
  • Breast Biopsy, Core and Open / Lumpetomy
  • Colon Cancer Surgery
  • Various minimally-invasive procedures
  • Haemorrhoids
  • Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy, Colon Resection, Nissen Fundoplication and Ventral Hernia Repair
  • Lung Surgery
  • Cataract surgery
  • Hysterectomy
  • Tonsil and appendix removal
  • Sclerotherapy
  • Ultrasound-Guided Sclerotherapy
  • Thyroid Surgery
  • Varicose Veins
  • VINUS Closure
  • Robotic-assisted surgeries

What should you expect at a General Surgery clinic?

The surgeon, and often also an attending nurse, will put you at ease before explaining what they do and why you’re there. You may have been referred either by your GP or another specialist. You will be asked relevant questions about your medical history, family history, allergies, lifestyle and symptoms, all tailored to the underlying problem. These help the surgeon figure out what’s wrong. You might need a physical examination. At the end of your appointment the surgeon will explain his conclusions and make sure you fully understand what’s going to happen next.
