He also established the first robotic HPB programme in the United Kingdom. He treats patients using laparoscopic and robotic Whipples when appropriate, and he performed the first robotic Whipple procedure in the UK.

Additionally, Professor Jiao was a pioneer of radiofrequency-assisted liver partitioning with portal vein ligation for staged liver resection in liver surgery. He was able to increase the number of patients undergoing liver surgery who were previously thought unresectable by inducing liver hypertrophy preoperatively to avoid liver failure. Professor Jiao has published papers on the application of radiofrequency in the treatment of liver tumours.
