5 ways to maintain the “pregnancy glow”

Pregnancy Glow Tips

Pregnancy often brings with it the so-called pregnancy glow. Changes to circulating blood volume and an abundance of hormones result in thick, shiny hair and a bright, flushed complexion for many women.  These changes usually start in the second trimester and can be maintained by following some simple daily skincare tips.

1. Practice sun safety:  In some women, hormonal changes can result in melasma or the mask of pregnancy. Light brown, or dark pigmentation can develop on the forehead, cheeks, or around the mouth.  This is made worse by ultraviolet radiation found in the sun so dont neglect the SPF.  Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen of at least factor 30 or higher. Try to stay out of direct sunlight between peak hours, 12pm – 4pm.

2. Eat a healthy diet:  There is evidence to suggest that diets high in carbohydrates or that have a high glycaemic index can cause skin problems such as acne.  Ensure you are eating plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables, pulses, and whole grains.

3. Relax and de-stress: Stress will increase the levels of pro-inflammatory hormones and chemicals, which can wreak havoc with your skin.  Ensure you are getting at least eight hours of sleep a night.  Find ways to learn how to relax like gentle walks, pregnancy yoga or meditation.

4. Moisturise your skin daily: Pregnancy and stretching of the skin can sometimes cause problems with itching, particularly in the third trimester.  Make sure you are moisturising daily and keeping your skin well-hydrated; this will reduce symptoms of itching and keep your skin supple.

5. Maintain a healthy body weight: Not only is this important from a general health perspective, but varicose veins can appear for the first time during pregnancy.  Excess weight gain puts more pressure on an already overloaded circulatory system and will aggravate the problem.
