Your smile has a great impact on how other people perceive you and having them straightened can help improve your own self-esteem. But having ugly wires on your teeth for years can feel a little off-putting.

Fortunately, due to modern technology, you can no have your teeth straightened without braces and/or metal wires. Dr Pradeep Sharma, dentist at Lister House Dental, is here to tell us more.

So, what are clear aligners?

Clear aligners are the preferred alternative to traditional braces. These straighten teeth using a series of nearly invisible, removable aligners that are custom-made specifically for your teeth. As you replace each aligner at regular intervals, your teeth will move – little by little, week by week, gradually moving towards the projected final position.

What is the process for getting them fitted?

Your dentist will either use digital technology and/or impressions to create a personalised treatment plan.  Patients will often receive a brief video simulation of how your teeth will move into its final and straight position.

Once you consent to treatment the dentist will be able to supply you with your aligners. It is recommended that these aligners are worn for 22 hours a day.

What can clear aligners help fix?

Clear aligners have been shown to be effective for a wide range of teeth straightening cases such as:

  • gapped teeth
  • crooked teeth
  • when upper teeth bite over lower teeth or vice versa
  • misalignment
  • crowding.

Teenagers and adults of any age can use clear aligners.

What about brushing?

Since they are removable there are no dietary restrictions and you can brush and floss properly. They are comfortable to wear and you may get a straighter in smile in approximately three months.

Some cases, of course, may take longer. After completion of your treatment you may need to wear a clear aligner known as retainer at night to maintain the position of your teeth.

What are the other benefits?

Did you know that teeth straightening not only creates the smile of your dreams but also leads to better oral health? First of all straight teeth are easier to clean and hence less susceptible to developing decay and gum disease and tooth loss.

Straight teeth allow for proper oral functions such as speech and chewing and less stress on the joints and muscles that allow for chewing.

What are the first steps to take for getting clear aligners?

If you have been contemplating this  then the best place to start is by a visit to your dentist who will be able to carry out a thorough personalised consultation with you. A better version of your smile is closer than you think.
