About

Neil graduated from the University of Glasgow in 1991 and has been an ENT Consultant at QMC and KMH in Nottinghamshire since 2005.

After completing general surgical training through the West of Scotland Surgical Training Programme and obtaining FRCS in General Surgery, he moved to the Nottingham area in 1998 to take part in the foremost ENT training programme of the time. Having completed this specialist training, he undertook a fellowship in Australia in otology and neurotology along with paediatric ENT and rural ENT medicine. On returning to the UK he was appointed jointly to to the post of ENT consultant at KMH and QMC in 2005.

He currently works at QMC and KMH and has established a weekly children's clinic at Newark. Along side NHS work, he consults privately at the Spire Hospital and also operates there. He  has a well established private practice over the past 15 years or more.

Neil is active within teaching and examines for the intercollegiate exam for the Royal College of Surgeons of Great Britain and Ireland (the examine that surgical trainees must pass to complete training and become independent consultants) and is on the question writing panel, he examines for the European Board Examination in ENT (and is a memeber of the specialist paediatric group) and is named supervisor for trainees in ENT and is involved in all aspects of teaching and training. In addition he has previously been responsible for all newly qualified doctors in the hospital.

Dr Fergie has also been actively involved in research throughout his training and has been awarded MD from University of Leicester in the field of cochlear neuro-protection and is involved in research into the cause of otitis media with effusion (glue ear). Although he maintains an active research interest this work is now focused solely on patient focused clinically relevant research and audit. He has received grants from GSK, and Leicester Hospitals and charitable organisations and has been sponsored to travel to the Causse clinic in France and the University of Pennsylvania Balance Centre.

He currently represents the specialty of ENT for the UK at the European Society of Medical Specialties and in the surgical safety group CORESS.
