Mr. Prokopios Annis is an accomplished consultant orthopaedic surgeon specialising in spinal surgery. He is currently the Lead of Adult Spinal Deformity Surgery at The Walton Neurosurgical Centre, in Liverpool.
He attended medical school at the Universita degli Studi G d Annunzio, and earned his Doctor of Medicine and Surgery degree in 2000.
After completing his studies in Italy, Mr. Annis returned to Thessaloniki, Greece, where he finished his surgical training. He also spent a year providing medical expertise and support to the Greek army during his national service.
In 2006, Mr. Annis started his initial training in Trauma and Orthopaedic surgery at Asclepieion Hospital. It was during his residency there that he discovered his passion for spinal surgery. To further specialise in this field, he travelled to Salt Lake City, Utah, USA, where he spent six months at the Spinal Department of the University of Utah under the guidance of renowned Professor Darrel Brodke.
In 2011, Mr. Annis earned the specialty title in Orthopaedics and Trauma surgery. That same year, he returned to Utah for advanced training in spinal surgery. Over the next four years, he focused extensively on spinal training and research, particularly in preventing complications in Adult Spinal Deformity. During this time, he published numerous articles in respected scientific journals, presented his research at international conferences, and contributed to various medical books.
In 2012, his outstanding work earned him the prestigious Russel Hibbs award from the Scoliosis Research Society (SRS). During his time in Utah, he also completed the AO Spine North America research fellowship and a clinical spinal fellowship at the University of Utah. He gained extensive experience in complex spinal surgery, addressing a wide range of spinal problems, including challenging conditions such as 'degenerative scoliosis' and 'fixed sagittal imbalance,' which involve the entire spinal column from the skull to the pelvis.
In 2014, Mr. Annis made the decision to return to Europe. In November of that year, he was appointed as a Spinal Consultant at the Royal University Hospital in Liverpool.

Generally, a very good experience. Mr Annis was a little difficult to understand at times, but he willingly repeated something we had not understood. He was very thorough and explained his thinking. I was pleased he was going to write to our GP and suggest pads for my back, when all that was suggested before was painkillers.

Mr Annis was very helpful in explaining what was causing my pain as well as helping with effective treatment

Mr Annis was very pleasant. However, he speaks very quickly , coupled with his accent I struggled to hear or understand him. This made it difficult to ask questions and understand what he was telling me. His letter is inaccurate in parts. I have tried Ibruprofen and Pilates. The Pilates made the situation worse, My Physiotherapist requested an X ray of my spine I knew nothing of the arthritis till my appointment with Mr Anni s as the X ray report from the hospital made no mention of it. I am grateful from to see from his letter that it is only mild. I was under the impression he had requested and MRI scan but I see it is a CT scan. This helps with authorisation from my insurer. Mr Annis is clearly an excellent Clinician but for a someone who knows nothing of this condition I would have been grateful for a brief overview and what to expect from this condition. Google is not always the best way to learn.

Mr Annis was very reassuring, which helped reduce my anxiety and offered some ‘light at the end of the tunnel’, a very dispiriting and depressing tunnel in my case. Thank you 🙏🏻

May I recommend Mr. Annis, my esteemed colleague with whom I have worked for more than five years. As a rheumatologist and spinal surgeon, we often share care of patients. I very much value his clinical opinion and know that I have a trusted colleague with whom I can discuss spinal problems and refer patients to as necessary. We work collaboratively together and I rely on him as my "go to" spinal surgeon at Spire Murrayfield. Patients have often commented to me that Mr. Annis very much puts them at ease during his consultation, has the ability to explain their clinical problem in a clear and informative way, and is very good at explaining the different treatment options available. I highly recommend him.
