Orthopaedic Surgeon
Truro, TR1 3UP
Mr Mark Norton is an Orthopaedic Consultant with a particular interest and experience in hip preservation, replacement and revision surgery, including the management of younger adults with FAI (femoro-acetabular impingement) or Hip Impingement Syndrome using a spectrum of non-operative measures, minimal access surgery and open surgery. He also performs hip resurfacing and total hip replacement for hips that are not able to be preserved. He and his team have presented the largest series of results at 10 years of this form of surgery in the UK.
Mr Norton achieved his primary medical qualification from the University of Cape Town Medical School in 1989, spending the next 13 years training to become an Orthopaedic Surgeon. Outside his clinical work, he regularly lectures on hip preserving surgery at National and International meetings. He advocates the blood supply preserving trochanteric flip surgical approach for hip resurfacing aimed at maximising the possible life span of hip resurfacing in younger high demand patients although he also uses the standard posterior approach method of hip resurfacing for appropriate cases. He has been profiled in Cornwall Today August 2008 magazine regarding hip resurfacing.

I have now had two hip replacements and both times Mark Norton explained the process to both me and my husband from start to finish. He took the time to explain what we were seeing on the xrays in detail.

Mr Norton has been calm, knowledgeable, experienced and reassuring at every meeting. His diagnosis of the Xray, months before the op, totally matched the diagnosis that I had received privately, when I was considering going for a private operation. It was good to see him on the morning of the operation at the hospital chatting to other patients in the ward and seeing how they were faring. His manner was cheerful and steady - very reassuring - giving an all is well with the world feeling and a feeling of established, consistently good practice. He was good humoured when talking to me and drawing the arrow on my leg and letting me know what to expect that morning. I appreciated the quick chat with me after the op, in the ward, to check that the physiotherapists would have time to make sure that I had the opportunity to stand and try walking on my new hip. My consultation, 6-weeks post op, was great as he confirmed that my progress was as it should be, he was pleased that I could walk quite fast and that the wound had healed very well. His explanations about how not to dislocate the hip were very clear and the explanations of what else could happen over the years was clear, too. I feel very clear about how to proceed with sport and getting back to normal. Thank you for being so brilliant at your job and the expert care you have given me.
