About

Vladimir Bobić is a Consultant Orthopaedic Knee Surgeon in full-time clinical and surgical practice. He is the Director and founder of Chester Knee Clinic and Cartilage Repair Centre. Founded in 1996, the clinic is based at the Nuffield Grosvenor Hospital in Chester, and is recognised as an ISAKOS and ICRS-approved teaching centre.

Mr Bobić has over 26 years of extensive experience in all aspects of knee surgery, including arthroscopic surgery, ligament reconstruction, knee arthroplasty and particularly in articular cartilage repair. He is the founder of the Liverpool Knee Service and held the post of full-time NHS knee surgeon at The Royal Liverpool and Broadgreen University Hospitals, Broadgreen Hospital, Liverpool from 1996 to 2002.

Mr Bobic lives in Cheshire with his wife, and they have two daughters. He is keen downhill skier, ski tourer and road cyclist, and enjoys being in the mountains and hiking. He is also keen woodworker and lamp-maker.

Mr Bobić is an internationally recognised expert and one of the UK's clinical pioneers in knee articular cartilage repair. He is the inventor and instrument designer of Arthrex OATS (Osteochondral Autograft Transfer System) articular cartilage repair technology. He performed the first ACI (Autologous Chondrocyte Implantation) in the North West of England in 1998, and today regularly performs a wide range of cartilage repair procedures in Chester, including ACI surgery. He was granted Liverpool LREC approval for a Randomised comparative evaluation of Genzyme Carticel ACI vs. Microfracture in the treatment of articular cartilage defects of the knee in October 1999, and South Cheshire LREC for multicentre clinical study of The effectiveness of ACI compared with MACI for the treatment of damaged articular cartilage of the knee (MREC approved Stanmore multicentre clinical trial) in May 2003. He was also a member of the MRC funded and MREC approved ACTIVE trial (multicentre trial of autologous chondrocyte implantation) based at The Robert Jones and Agnes Hunt Orthopaedic Hospital in Oswestry.

He is the principal investigator in an ongoing BioPoly femoral implant clinical trial: Multi-centre, open label, prospective, consecutive series registry database of BioPoly RS Partial Resurfacing Knee Implant, approved by the NHS NRES Committee East of England – Cambridge Central on 14 September 2011, based at the Grosvenor Hospital Chester and three other hospitals in England. This study was completed in 2016 and published in the JBJS Am Open Access in 2017.

He continues to focus on articular cartilage repair as his main clinical, imaging and research interest. His clinical and surgical practice includes all contemporary articular cartilage repair technologies like subchondral drilling (or microfracture), OATS (autologous osteochondral grafting, often combined with implantation of autologous bone marrow aspirate), AMIC (deep subchondral drilling combined with collagen ChondroGide membrane), ACI or CCI (autologous chondrocyte implantation or characterized chondrocyte implantation), PRP and autologous stem cell-based therapies.

Mr Bobić has a decade of experience in using autologous bone marrow aspirate in combination with deep subchondral drilling and autologous osteochondral grafting (OATS) for the treatment of mild to moderate distal femoral osteoarthritis. He also organised the first regional seminar on the use of Autologous Stem Cell Therapies in Orthopaedics, held in Chester in June 2013.

He introduced proprietary in-house-processed autologous stem cell technology (derived from autologous fat tissue or autologous bone marrow aspirate) in 2014, for the treatment of sports injuries and other knee conditions like patella and quadriceps tendinosis, ligament sprains and partial tears, meniscal and articular cartilage repair and articular cartilage damage and defects.
