    About

Professor Richard Field is a consultant orthopaedic surgeon who specialises in hip-related issues. He is the UK's most experienced surgeon in direct anterior hip replacement and has used this minimally invasive, muscle-sparing technique for more than 2000 patients. He uses both the standard longitudinal and the less visible bikini incisions as needed. Prof. Field has extensive experience in complex sports and developmental hip problems, and he is regarded as a world leader in hip preservation and rapid recovery hip replacement surgery. He lectures internationally and performs more than 200 hip operations each year. He has also previously worked as an advisor for the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence.

Prof. Field undertook his medical training at Westminster Hospital in 1980 before working at a number of London hospitals, including The Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital and University College Hospital. He went on to complete a PhD at Cambridge University and undertook specialist orthopaedic training in the UK and Australia. He is a professor of orthopaedic surgery at St George's University of London and the director of research at the South West London Elective Orthopaedic Centre (SWLEOC). His private practice is primarily at The Lister Hospital in Chelsea.

Prof. Field is a pioneer of arthroscopic hip surgery and was the first surgeon in the London area to use hip resurfacing. He has previously served as the president of the International Society for Hip Arthroscopy and has been involved in the design and evaluation of novel implant designs since 1983. He is currently conducting clinical research on short femoral stem implants as well as some of the newer hip resurfacing designs. Where appropriate, he uses robotic-assisted surgery and patient-specific custom cutting blocks to achieve optimal component alignment. (Patients who want to be considered for novel implant studies may need to be treated at SWLEOC).

Professor Field is very personable. His explanation of my condition and recommendation as to what my best options are was excellent. His common sense no nonsense approach was exactly what was required. I would have no compunction in recommending him to friends and family.

From the first consultation to the post operation review there was nothing Professor Field did which was other than excellent. My new hip has changed my life and I am no longer at all conscious that it is a new hip!

Right from the first face to face consultation to the follow up checks (by phone or Zoom calls) I have been most impressed with Professor Richard Field and his team at The Lister Hospital. I was treated with due care and respect throughout, and had complete confidence in a successful surgical outcome and attentive post operative care. I am now 16 days post operative, having had a total hip replacement via the anterior approach, and my progress has exceeded my best expectations. I am nearly 74, and have had minimal pain or discomfort. I cannot recommend Professor Richard Field highly enough, and am already looking forward to my skiing holiday next season!

At my first pre-op meeting I was impressed by the time given and the clarity provided by Professor Field on what I might expect from my upcoming hip surgery. In particular, the path it, and my recovery, would take. It all proceeded as he had predicted and my operation was a success, allowing me to walk unaided within 14 days and pain free within a month. I felt in very good hands at all stages of my operation, and when I had questions they were quickly answered with the help of his very efficient secretarial support, which was important to me.

"Prof Field is an internationally renowned expert on the anterior approach to the hip. I have looked after a number of patients who have seen Prof Field for their hip surgery and they all eulogise about the care and treatments they have received under Prof's team. We share an anaesthetist, secretary and theatre team and cross refer patients."

"Professor Richard Field is an international pioneer in hip surgery where he has demonstrated excellent clinical and patient reported outcomes. Prof Field has innovated hip resurfacing techniques as well as less traumatic approaches to total hip replacements called the muscle sparing Direct Anterior Approach. The latter harnesses a direct anatomical approach to minimise the side effects of hip surgery surgery resulting in rapid patient recoveries. Prof Field is a world leader in his field of expertise and is an absolute asset to the hospitals he works in: HCA the Lister, Chelsea Outpatients, the Spire St Anthonys' and the South West London Elective Orthopaedic Centre where he is Director of the Academic Centre. Prof Field is a fantastic colleague who is personable and talented in everything he does. "

"I have known Richard as a friend and a colleague for many years. I now work with him looking after patients with Osteoarthritis. Any patients with hip problems I refer to Richard. In my opinion he is an excellent and highly skillful surgeon. He is a leading proponent of the direct anterior approach. He is now also using the MAKO robot to perform hip replacements. If I or any of my family need a THR I will ask Richard to do it. "
