About

Professor Richard Field is a consultant orthopaedic surgeon who specialises in hip-related issues. He is the UK's most experienced surgeon in direct anterior hip replacement and has used this minimally invasive, muscle-sparing technique for more than 2000 patients. He uses both the standard longitudinal and the less visible bikini incisions as needed. Prof. Field has extensive experience in complex sports and developmental hip problems, and he is regarded as a world leader in hip preservation and rapid recovery hip replacement surgery. He lectures internationally and performs more than 200 hip operations each year. He has also previously worked as an advisor for the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence.

Prof. Field undertook his medical training at Westminster Hospital in 1980 before working at a number of London hospitals, including The Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital and University College Hospital. He went on to complete a PhD at Cambridge University and undertook specialist orthopaedic training in the UK and Australia. He is a professor of Orthopaedic surgery at St George's University of London and was director of research at the South West London Elective Orthopaedic Centre (SWLEOC) from 2004-21. His private practice is primarily at The Lister Hospital in Chelsea.

Prof. Field is a pioneer of arthroscopic hip surgery and has undertaken hip resurfacing since 1995. He served as the president of the International Society for Hip Arthroscopy, 2016-17, and has been involved in the design and evaluation of novel implant designs since 1983. He is currently conducting clinical research on short femoral stem implants as well as some of the newer hip resurfacing designs. Where appropriate, he uses robotic-assisted surgery to achieve optimal component alignment. (Patients who want to be considered for novel implant studies may need to be treated at SWLEOC).

Compassionate, caring ,highly skilled and very well organised clinician surrounded by a great secretary and extended team at The Lister .Great explanations of my options were given to me me verbally and in writing. I had a hybrid hip replacement and I was out of hospital and walking with one crutch after only a day with only some Paracetamol required after the third day. Transformational magic relief of my previous pain . Highly recommended .

Explanation

In August, I consulted Professor Richard Field for avascular necrosis (AVN) in my hips, leading to a two-inch leg length discrepancy on my right side. Professor Field meticulously analyzed my X-rays and provided a comprehensive explanation of the condition, including strategies to improve mobility. Despite his busy schedule, he dedicated ample time to address all my queries, demonstrating remarkable patience and expertise. Professor Field's balanced presentation of surgical benefits and risks greatly assisted in my decision-making process. My research indicated that expertise in anterior hip replacements is rare in the UK, positioning Professor Field as a leading specialist in this domain. The bilateral hip replacement surgery he conducted using Mako Robotics on November 29th yielded exceptional results. I experienced immediate correction of my leg discrepancy and was able to walk the same night, highlighting a rapid recovery with minimal post-operative pain. This success is a testament to Professor Field’s advanced pain management techniques, including the contributions of Dr. Hussein, the skilled anesthesiologist. Just two weeks post-surgery, my mobility has significantly improved, allowing me to exercise and navigate stairs with ease. In my 40s, I appreciate that pain management and recovery experiences can vary, but my own has been exceptionally positive, marked by smooth rehabilitation. Professor Field’s weekly follow-ups post-surgery have been invaluable, providing opportunities to discuss any concerns and receive beneficial advice. I am eagerly anticipating my upcoming appointment with Professor Field in six weeks to evaluate the progress of my new hips and overall mobility. My deepest gratitude goes to Professor Richard Field and his team for their extraordinary care and the successful outcome of my surgery.

Following the initial consultation with Professor Field I knew I had made the right decision to go ahead with an anterior hip replacement. All of my questions have been answered and I felt well prepared for the surgery. My post operative recovery has been swift and receiving two phone calls from Prof. Field has been reassuring. It has certainly been worth while travelling to see Professor Field.

I was very fortunate to have my hip replacement operation by Professor Field on the 21.06.23. Preoperational experience was very good and explanation of what to expect before and after the operation very informative. Reassurance and guidance during professor weekly calls after operation made a big difference for my recovery. It is only 2 weeks after operation and I could already walk at home without the crutches, also I could walk upstairs without them! The scar is very neat and much smaller than I expected. Thank you very much for the fantastic operation Professor Field!

Professor Richard Field is an international pioneer in hip surgery where he has demonstrated excellent clinical and patient reported outcomes. Prof Field has innovated hip resurfacing techniques as well as less traumatic approaches to total hip replacements called the muscle sparing Direct Anterior Approach. The latter harnesses a direct anatomical approach to minimise the side effects of hip surgery surgery resulting in rapid patient recoveries. Prof Field is a world leader in his field of expertise and is an absolute asset to the hospitals he works in: HCA the Lister, Chelsea Outpatients, the Spire St Anthonys' and the South West London Elective Orthopaedic Centre where he is Director of the Academic Centre. Prof Field is a fantastic colleague who is personable and talented in everything he does.

I have known Richard as a friend and a colleague for many years. I now work with him looking after patients with Osteoarthritis. Any patients with hip problems I refer to Richard. In my opinion he is an excellent and highly skillful surgeon. He is a leading proponent of the direct anterior approach. He is now also using the MAKO robot to perform hip replacements. If I or any of my family need a THR I will ask Richard to do it.
