    About

Professor Philip MacCarthy specialises in coronary intervention (angioplasty/stenting) and structural heart disease interventions. He also runs the successful patent foramen ovale (PFO)/atrial septal defect (ASD) device closure and trans-catheter valve (aortic valve/TAVI/MitraClip) programmes at King's College Hospital.

After training in Bristol and Oxford, Prof. MacCarthy undertook a PhD in endothelial function at the University Hospital of Wales (with an MRC Clinical Training Fellowship). Following this, he trained in coronary intervention at King's College Hospital and the OLV Cardiac Centre in Aalst, Belgium. He was appointed as Consultant Cardiologist at King's College Hospital in 2003 and became Clinical Lead for Cardiology in 2007. He was later appointed as Professor of Interventional Cardiology and served as Clinical Director of Cardiovascular Services from 2012 to 2015.

Prof. MacCarthy is active in research with interests in coronary physiology, primary angioplasty, and transcatheter aortic/mitral interventions.

It is important that HCA is transparent about our relationship with those doctors who provide us with clinical guidance on delivering the best possible care to patients and operating our hospitals safely and efficiently. We set out here some of the ways in which we work together and the amount we pay this doctor for such services.
