Professor Parwez Hossain is an Associate Professor in Ophthalmology and a Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon with over 25 years of experience in ophthalmology and 15 years of experience specialising in cornea, cataract and ocular surface diseases.
As a specialist eye surgeon, Professor Hossain carries out surgeries including premium cataract surgery, and has expertise in extended focus (EDOF), continuous transitional focus (CTF) and toric intraocular lenses.
Professor Hossain in also a well-known specialist in corneal disorders, including corneal infections, keratoconus, corneal neuropathy, corneal trauma, ocular surface diseases such as blepharitis, dry eye, meibomian gland dysfunction, ocular rosacea and herpetic keratitis. He has patients visiting him from the UK and all over the world.
As an innovator in his field, Professor Hossain has developed optimised surgical techniques for corneal transplants, ocular surface reconstruction and anterior segment approaches for visual rehabilitation. Many corneal surgeons now use his techniques and he has trained several corneal surgeons around the world. Additionally, Professor Hossain has invented a method for pterygium surgery that minimises relapses, irritation and enhances appearance. He is also the head of an international research group looking into optimal remedies for corneal conditions.
Professor Hossain is the King James IV Professor of Ophthalmology at the Southampton University Hospital. He was awarded the prestigious King James IV Professorship from The Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh as a result of his innovative work in corneal diseases and surgical procedures.
He is also the associate editor of 'Eye', scientific journal for the Royal College of Ophthalmologists, and the section editor for the Journal of Eucornea, scientific journal for the European Society for Corneal Specialists - EuCornea.
