Professor McGurk is a Consultant Oral and Maxillofacial and Head and Neck Surgeon, part of the North London Head and Neck Cancer Group and provides a specialist service in oral and head and neck cancer, reconstruction and salivary gland disease. He is past president of the British Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons and past editor of the British Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery.
He studied at Sheffield University before undertaking junior posts in oral and maxillofacial surgery and a six month period visiting maxillofacial units in the United States. Professor McGurk later returned to Sheffield to complete his medical degree.
Professor McGurk has completed significant research in his field and focused on the early diagnosis of head and neck cancer, complications of surgery, and the use of minimally invasive surgery for head and neck cancer. He has written two books on salivary disease and influenced the practice of salivary gland surgery to move from excision to gland preservation. He also led a European trial on sentinel node biopsy which led to a 75% reduction in neck dissection for early mouth cancers. In addition, he developed a new way to treat odontogenic tumours (ameloblastoma) which preserves the mandible and normal facial appearance.
Professor McGurk lectures at national and international conferences and runs classes on salivary gland surgery in London, Paris and Erlangen for Maxillofacial and ENT Consultants.

Mr McGurk is honest and straight forward, he explained my procedure in the simplest of terms, I understood exactly what he was going to do before my surgery.
Excellent. Have had a successful surgery and a v high standard of follow up care. I highly recommend Prof McGurk and his fantastic team.
Professor McGurk inspired confidence from the first time I met him for a second opinion on the best option for treatment and it was an easy decision to undergo surgery with him. He took the time to explain all aspects of the procedure from the outset and provided exemplary care throughout. I cannot recommend him too highly.
Very clear explanations of the procedure beforehand: I was confident I knew what to expect. Afterwards told me how it went in an unusual level of detail, which I appreciated. And the result was great.
The professor was very informative and explained everything to me.
Explained the treatment required in easily understandable terms.
Very reassuring and competent doctor.
An excellent combination of knowledge and experience.
Travelled from York seeking Professor McGurk's expertise and he did an excellent job at diagnosing, explaining and performing operation, putting me at ease at a stressful time and enabling me to make a speedy recovery. I highly recommend Professor McGurk - brilliant patient care from start to finish.
Prof Mark McGurk is an outstanding and unique medical professional. Not only is he technically superb (I can eat, speak and drink almost normally after the removal of half my tongue along-with the tumour that necessitated the operation and have virtually no visible external scars) but his dedication to and care for his patients is outstanding. I am very lucky to have had him as the surgeon for my operation and then consultant for the subsequent monitoring and remission period of five years to "cure". Indeed, he is still in touch with and providing support to me if I have any concerns or challenges some six and a half years after the operation.
I have been a patient of mark McGurk for 3 years and find him exemplary in every way.His early diagnosis and the speed at which he performed my operation may just have been life saving. His subsequent monitoring has been exceptional in making me well informed of the process of recovery and return to normality.he gives patients confidence and assurance all delivered in an engaging and friendly manner,I have much to be thankful of.
Professor McGurk's medical/surgical expertise and his empathetic interaction with the patient are of the highest order. Unquestionably he is a leader in his field, at the forefront of advances in the treatment of oral cancer.
