About

Professor David Nicol, Consultant Urologist, currently works within the Royal Marsden Hospital NHS Trust. He is highly specialised in the treatment of urological cancer (complex kidney and testicular cancer), as well as having years of specialisation in general adult urology (bladder and prostatic symptoms, male genital problems, and urinary infections).

Prof Nicol began his medical education in Australia, training in Brisbane and Queensland before moving abroad to study in Canada. He previously held several roles in Australia including Director of Urology and Renal Transplantation in Brisbane and Professor of Surgery at the University of Queensland. He performed the first laparoscopic surgery for a nephrectomy in 1993. Following this, he moved to the UK in 2009, holding positions at the Royal Free Hospital and UCLH where he was appointed to be Clinical Lead of Renal Transplantation and Renal Surgery. In 2012 he moved to the Royal Marsden Hospital, where he performed complex surgery for both renal and testicular cancer patients. For testicular cancer alone, he performs about 25% of all retroperitoneal lymph node resections done in the UK.

Mr Nicol is also an active researcher, focusing on kidney and testicular cancer. His work has resulted in the publication of over 150 articles and he has written 8 book chapters. He is regularly invited to speak at conferences around the world and is a member of the European Association of Urology Testicular Cancer Guidelines and the NCRI Kidney and Bladder Research Committee. He also actively teaches urologists around the world in his sub-specialities.

I owe Professor Nicol my life. He successfully undertook complex re- surgery on my horseshoe shaped kidney to remove a kidney malignancy. He kept my family fully informed when I was too ill post operatively. His skill and sincerity come through at all stages from his surgical management plan to post operative reviews. I am very fortunate to have come under his care.
