    Biography

Professor Carlo Di Mario is an honorary consultant cardiologist at Royal Brompton & Harefield Hospitals Specialist Care, where he treats private patients.

He studied medicine and cardiology at the University of Padova in Italy, his home country. He then completed his interventional training and PhD at the Erasmus University of Rotterdam, in the Netherlands. He went on to be the research and clinical director for interventional cardiology at the San Raffaele Hospital in Milan, Italy.

In 2003, Professor Di Mario took up a specialist post at Royal Brompton & Harefield NHS Foundation Trust. Alongside that role he was Professor of Clinical Cardiology at Imperial College London.

Since 2016, Professor Di Mario has been Chair of Cardiology at the University of Florence in Italy.

    Clinical expertise

Professor Carlo Di Mario is a specialist in interventional cardiology – the use of catheters and other devices to restore blood flow to the heart without major surgery. These interventions can significantly help patients who are suffering from symptoms such as angina and shortness of breath.

It is a relatively new field and is growing rapidly to include interventions on the heart valves (TAVI, MitraClip), peripheral vessels and the correction of other structural heart abnormalities.

He is also a recognised authority in the field of intravascular imaging, with ultrasound, optical coherence tomography and near-infrared spectroscopy used for research and clinical guidance.
