Professor Wasim Hanif is a Professor of Diabetes & Endocrinology and Consultant Physician, serving as Clinical Director in diabetes at University Hospital Birmingham. He also sees private patients at The Priory Hospital, The Harborne Hospital and The Edgbaston Hospital. His specialised training, including an MD from the University of Birmingham, was acquired in Birmingham. He has held the role of Consultant Physician in Diabetes & Endocrinology at University Hospital Birmingham, and in 2013, he was appointed as an Honorary Professor in Medicine.

Professor Hanif is actively engaged in various national bodies, holding positions such as Trustee at Diabetes UK, Member of NICE HTA and MHRA, and Chair of Diabetes SAHF. He is globally recognised for his expertise, providing counsel to the UK Government, European Parliament, and Commonwealth Ministers. He has chaired guideline development groups for the International Diabetes Federation and other organisations.

At a parliamentary level, Prof Hanif advises the government on Diabetes and ethnic health issues. He chairs the Diabetes Working Group of the South Asian Heart Foundation (SAHF) and contributes to the Parliamentary and Stakeholder Diabetes Think Tank. He serves on the Board of Directors for Apnee Sehat, a UK-based social enterprise focusing on innovative healthcare delivery.

Prof Hanif has also authored numerous publications, toolkits, and guides in ethnic health. Notably, his 2009 report on research gaps among South Asians with Diabetes in the UK was launched at the Houses of Parliament. His involvement with NICE spans advisory roles on various committees, including Health Technology Appraisals, and providing expertise on issues such as obesity definitions, diabetes prevention, and new treatments.
