About

Professor Martin Koltzenburg is a neurologist and the Head of the Department of Clinical Neurophysiology at The National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery at Queen Square. He is an internationally recognised clinician scientist with more than 30 years of research experience in the neurobiology of pain. He specialises in neurophysiological techniques in the assessments of neuromuscular disorders including neuropathic pain and translational methods in drug discovery

Professor Koltzenburg studied medicine at the University of Kiel, Germany with a BSc course in Neology at the University College London (UCL). He completed postdoctoral research and clinical specialist training at the Department of Physiology of the University of Erlangen, the Department of Neurology of the University of Würzburg, Germany and the Department of Clinical Neurophysiology of the University of Uppsala, Sweden. In 2001 he took up post as Professor of Pain Research at UCL, before becoming chair of Clinical Neurophysiology in 2007.

He is highly active in clinical research and has published over 100 peer reviewed original articles. He has also edited several books including Wall and Melzack's Textbook of Pain. In recent years, Professor Koltzenburg has done a large amount of research into the properties of sensory neurons on a cellular and system level. He has won numerous prizes including the Patrick Wall Medal of the British Pain Society and the Research Prize of the International Association for the Study of Pain. He lectures regularly internationally and has spoken the Nobel Forum, Karolinska Institute in Stockholm, Canadian Pain Consortium, the Michael Cousins Foundation and the Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists. He is also on the editorial board of the Journal of Pain, Nature Reviews in Neurology and Faculty 1000 Medicine.
