Graduated MB ChB in 1971 from Leeds Medical School having intercalated Hons BSc in Biochemistry in Relation to Medicine in 1968. Trained in general medicine and gastroenterology at Hope Hospital, Salford (now Salford Royal NHS Trust), Manchester Royal Infirmary and Royal Victoria Infirmary, Newcastle upon Tyne. Gained MRCP (UK) in 1974 and elected FRCP (London) in 1993. Awarded MD (1980) and PhD (1987) for research into small intestinal and colonic transport physiology in health and disease. Gained further training in research in the Section of Digestive Diseases, Department of Internal Medicine, Yale University, USA (1981-1983), leading to award of prestigious Medical Research Council Senior Clinical Fellowship (1983-1989) to enable establishment of independent research programme in UK. Long track record of research funded from a variety of sources, including Medical Research Council, Wellcome Trust, Royal Society, and British Heart Foundation. Currently collaborate with colleagues in Leeds, Germany and USA. Moved to Leeds in 1998 as an NHS consultant gastroenterologist and became Professor of Clinical Science in 2000. Retired from the University of Leeds in 2016, becoming Emeritus Professor of Clinical Science, but continued to work as NHS consultant gastroenterologist within Leeds Teaching Hospital Trust until September 2019. Currently undertake private practice at Spire Leeds Hospital, and also see NHS patients at Living Care, Thorpe Park, Leeds.
