Professor Chris Summerton is a highly experienced Consultant specializing in Gastroenterology, with extensive knowledge of gastrointestinal diseases. He currently works as the Training Programme Director for Gastroenterology, and he is a part-time Consultant for the Lancashire Teaching Hospitals Foundation Trust.

Professor Summerton qualified in Medicine from Cambridge University in 1983, before completing clinical training in Birmingham, Manchester, and Cambridge. He then undertook in-depth research on liver disease in Cambridge which led to him being awarded an MD in 1994.

In 1996, he was appointed as Consultant at Trafford General Hospital where he established the Gastroenterology Department. In 2012, the hospital became a part of the NHS Foundation Trust, and Professor Summerton continued to work in the new department until 2017. During his time at Trafford General Hospital, he had also been providing training for Specialist Registrars since 2004. He was also an Honorary Professor at Salford University since 2004, where he was involved in medical education and the set-up of the MSc Gastroenterology course.

Professor Summerton has also written chapters in many textbooks and has traveled internationally to Egypt and Nigeria, where he provided lectures on gastroenterology and endoscopy.
