I was the first National Trainee in Allergy in the UK and completed my specialist training at Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Trust in 2006. At the end of my training, I was awarded a Clinical Research Fellowship by the Medical Research Council to read for a PhD at King's College London. I started work as clinical lead in adult allergy at Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust (St Mary's) in May 2010. St Mary's is the oldest allergy clinic in the UK and is famous worldwide as the home of allergen immunotherapy.
When I am seeing patients in the allergy clinic, the ability to transform lives often in the space of a single visit is one of the reasons I love my work. A lack of information helps no one. I have seen patients who have suffered unnecessarily with out of control allergies for years and others who have thought they are allergic to something, only to find that they are not. Hay fever is just one example, almost everyone can be helped yet so many people itch and wheeze and sneeze through the spring and summer when they don't have to. Food allergy is another area where people can struggle to access help. When it comes to drug allergy, far more people think they are allergic to medicines than actually are. This can have far-reaching consequences; particularly when it comes to avoiding Penicillin unnecessarily.
I believe in trying to make medicine accessible to the public and have appeared multiple times on national television. I speak publically about allergies and have been quoted in the Times, Guardian, Daily Mail and Daily Express amongst others. I have been listed as an Expert Panelist In Waitrose Health and have spoken about allergies on the Liz Earle podcast. I am active on social media and have over 10,000 followers on Twitter. I want my patients and their families to feel empowered about what to do and when to seek help.
To this end, in March 2022, I published my first book called Understanding Allergy (Penguin Random House) aimed at both medical professionals and those suffering with allergy. It reached number 30 in the Amazon best sellers chart.

Our experience with Dr Farooque has been excellent. She listens, understand and explains her plan very well. In our case there was a particular pressing matter which she prioritised to enable us to have clarity on the allergy status so we could move forward with an upcoming surgery. We thank Dr Farooque for giving us a great experience and we appreciate her professionalism.

I can’t recommend Dr Farooque highly enough. I required a drugs challenge before I could have surgery. Dr Farooque completely put me at ease and clearly explained each stage of the testing process in an extremely calm and professional way. She showed much kindness and empathy. Dr Farooque’s care was outstanding and I wholeheartedly recommend her. I would also like to mention Dr Farooque’s PA, Iona who was so helpful and accommodating.

I first came across Dr. Farooque as the author of the wonderful little book _Understanding Allergy_. While reading it, I posted a picture on Instagram with a note saying "This book could save your life, or the life of somebody you love." And then it did! I had an unexpected life-threatening allergic reaction while on a solo business trip eight time zones from home. The book had inspired me to renew my medications and refreshed my memory about the symptoms, however, so what could easily have been the end of me turned into a mere inconvenience. Following the event, I sought Dr. Farooque's advice and could not be happier with her knowledge, professionalism, and kindness. It was a huge relief to discuss what had happened, what I needed to do to recover, and above all, what lifestyle changes I needed to make to make sure it didn't happen again. I have full and complete confidence in her knowledge and good judgment, and although I hope to avoid life-threatening emergencies in the future, would not hesitate to seek her advice again. I could not recommend her more enthusiastically.

My experience of being treated by Dr Sophie Farooque was simply outstanding. Sophie listened to my situation and read letters from my referring consultant. She then explained exactly what would happen with the skin price testing and the subsequent drug challenge tests. I felt very much at ease and she did what she promised.

The whole process from booking the appointment to be seeing seen worked like clockwork. Dr Farooque was great and identified the food I was allergic to and took me seriously. I now have a plan. She was friendly and really caring. I would highly recommend.
