About

Comfort Shields is a psychotherapist and chartered psychologist specialising in trauma and PTSD and is certifie in EMDR. She is also the Co-Founder of the Box Tree Clinic in the Harley Street medical district of Central London, where she served as clinical director for several years. She offers individual and couples therapy for adults of any culture, religion, gender and sexuality.

Dr Shields graduated from Oxford University with an MPhil and then undertook 5 years of further postgraduate training. She completed her clinical training placement at Yale University Medical Centre and clinical psychology training in the USA. This prepared her to become a confident and experienced psychotherapist. She was awarded her PhD in clinical psychology based on her dissertation on attachment, complex bereavement, and temporality.

She most often utilises a psychodynamic and humanistic approach for psychotherapy and has also been trained in psychoanalytic and person-centred therapy, narrative therapy and EMDR. She is able to use any of these approaches depending on the needs of her patient.

Additionally, Dr Shields is a qualified supervisor and leads supervision groups for psychotherapists and counsellors.

Dr Shields strongly believes that when one experiences bad times, the way that person integrates the experiences and manages the situation is what defines them as a person. When patients bring about these emotional challenges with Dr Shields, she will provide emotional validation and empathy as a way to connect with her patients and work through the problems.

In addition to accepting Aviva and Cigna, she also accepts Aetna International, and Bupa Global Insurance.

Explanation

I started seeing Comfort for psychotherapy several years ago, and at that moment, my life changed. The transformation we’ve achieved together has been beyond my expectations. Comfort is a master of her practice; from the first consultation, she listened carefully and showed genuine care and professionalism. Her interventions were always gentle, encouraging and consistent. Every session with Comfort felt like progress, and her commitment to my cause always felt absolute. She created a safe space for me to express myself, reflect, learn and renew. Together, we practised my self-awareness so that I could learn to manage my emotions independently and relate to others. Moreover, she helped me confront trauma and change my disposition from fear to love, first in myself and, in turn, others. Thanks to Comfort, I can now be present and participate in my life again, pursue my dreams and devote myself to purpose.
