Tim is a Consultant Orthopaedic Trauma and Sports Surgeon, specialising at the Edinburgh Nuffield Hospital in the treatment of ligament and cartilage injuries to the knee.  He is one of the most experienced arthroscopic (keyhole) surgeons in Scotland, with two decades in practice in ligament reconstructions (including the ACL), patella stabilisation, and cartilage repair and transplant.  He regularly treats professional sportsmen and women, including players for the top Premier League teams in Edinburgh and Glasgow, and successfully returned a player to the Qatar World Cup in 2022 after ACL reconstruction.  Working closely with sports physicians, musculoskeletal radiologists and physiotherapists, he aims to provide a comprehensive knee service for all those who wish to remain active.

In his NHS practise, Tim runs, with two colleagues, the Acute Knee Injuries Clinic at the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh, accepting referrals from the Lothians as well as from other orthopaedic surgeons in the Borders, Fife, Perth and Dundee.

He is a senior member of one of the busiest Trauma Services in the UK, carrying out complex reconstruction of injuries, fractures and dislocations after injury.

As a clinical academic researcher and educator, Tim is a Reader (Associate Professor) at the University of Edinburgh, past President of the Orthopaedic Trauma Society, the Director of several international and national courses, and is the author of more than 100 academic papers, as well as the most popular text-book in the specialty of Orthopaedic Trauma.
