I am sharing this to hopefully prevent other women from receiving the same negative and emotionally draining treatment that I encountered from Mr. Shaheen Khazali at The Lister Hospital in London. During my post-op appointment with Mr. Shaheen Khazali. My entire experience from beginning to end was demeaning and left me with many unanswered questions. Post-op the doctor was not available to address any of my concerns regarding the burning pain I was in and continue to experience. On the advice of his team, over the course of the next six weeks, I made repeated visits to Lister's urgent care (each visit costing me over £200 each time) as they advised they were not competent to support me. The final straw was during my six weeks post-op consultation, where his demeanour was very superior, sarcastic and extremely incompassionate. He did not address my questions that I had furnished him prior to our meeting and spent the vast majority of our short consultation dictating notes into his phone. Knowing that I was in pain for the entire six weeks, I was left flabbergasted that there was only a cursory physical exam and no review of my histology report. He kept saying weren't you in pain before your surgery-- yes I was and that is why I came to him to have surgery to reduce my pain. I left this meeting shaken and in tears and went directly to urgent care in the same hospital for further support and answers since the doctor was unwilling to discuss my case any further and he had summarily dismissed me. The urgent care team at Lister then referred me to another gynaecologist that same day who reviewed my histology report, ran blood tests, and carried out a CT scan. Seeing the other gynaecologist was like night and day in comparison to Mr. Khazali. Being an internationally renowned expert in your subject, and a brilliant surgeon is not all that matters in being a good doctor, overall patient care is as important! Having the ability to clearly explain your diagnosis to the patient is critical for a positive relationship.

I am so thankful that my GP recommended that I book a consultation with Mr Khazali to review options and find a solution for my growing fibroid that was causing me to experience such heavy periods that it made it difficult to go far from the house some days of the month and at times it really hindered daily life for me with being unable to work in the office or go out for long. From my first consultation via zoom due to covid and then our face to face consultations and ultimately my hysterectomy and the after care he always made me feel truly at ease, instantly building a rapport with you and I felt truly confident in my choice of consultant. The operation itself went smoothly and I healed quickly with very minimal discomfort after the operation - much less than I had anticipated. I was assigned a nurse that I could contact with any questions after I was discharged from hospital via phone or whats app which was an added extra. The operation really has changed my life with no longer having to plan activities avoiding certain days of the month and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend him to anyone else looking for a consultant who specialises in this field. I cannot fault the service I experienced with him and his team.

An exceptional surgeon who explained everything clearly from consultations through to surgery and beyond. The knowledge you shared helped me make informed decisions and your personable nature allayed my fears and demonstrated a level of genuine empathy that is sadly not so easily found in healthcare. Forever thankful for all you have done to improve the quality of my life- wishing you continued success!

Explanation

I have been suffering with severe endometriosis for 18-19 years. It was 16 years before it was diagnosed. By that time I had a considerable amount of disease and was in awful pain most of the time despite taking painkillers all the time. In April Mr Khazali operated on my at The Lister Hospital. I had a total hysterectomy, both ovaries removed, a segmental bowel resection to remove 3 large nodes on my bowel plus the removal of other endometriosis adhesions. The surgery was very successful. I can’t thank Mr Khazali and the other surgeons involved enough! I know they feel that they were only doing their jobs, but they have changed my life!! They are miracle workers in my book. I am now totally pain free. I don’t need painkillers anymore - in fact I was able to stop taking them within 2 weeks of the surgery. I’ve even been able to start eating some of the foods I had become intolerant to such as gluten an cauliflower. I would recommend Mr Khazali to anyone suffering from endometriosis. Thank you Mr Khazali.

Explanation

I was so frightened when I first went to see Mr Khazali in late 2019. I'd had weird symptoms and pain for years and had just accepted it as normal. My GP suspected fibroids so sent me for an ultrasound and then referred me to Mr Khazali. He was so kind and friendly, I felt reassured and safe. He performed my open myomectomy last September. Again, I was terrified! Even more so because the pandemic meant I had to spend a week self-isolating beforehand and had to go to the hospital alone. By the day of my surgery I felt so jumpy and lonely. Mr Khazali's wonderful nurse, Leandri, was in contact with me to explain things and answer questions during the self-isolation. And everyone at the hospital was wonderful. The anaesthetist came to see me beforehand and explained everything, reassuring me that he'd done this quite a bit so not to worry! He was so sweet. Then Mr Khazali came with his team and was very clear and straightforward, made everything seem very routine and normal and set my mind at rest. It was weirdly calming to know that mine was second in the list of operations he'd perform that day, no drama, no fuss, just getting on with it. Normalising of the situation really helped me! He came to see me after the operation and explained what they'd found and how everything had gone well although it was a bit more difficult than he'd anticipated because of a particularly large fibroid. My body felt different so quickly. The day after surgery I felt lighter, I could use the loo normally and my even with the post-surgery swelling my waist looked smaller! I didn't realise how much pain and discomfort I'd been in all those years. After I went home two days after surgery, Leandri followed up to check I was ok and I had her number so I could get in contact with her with any worries. She was so amazing. I really cannot recommend Mr Khazali enough, he's really the best! He is clearly a very busy man but he takes all the time he can to set you at ease and explain things clearly.
