I was amazed by his empathy, I felt heard for the first time. I was asked what I thought was the best option for me while still received the most professional advice from a medical standpoint. I felt reassured and in safe hands. While all the tests prior to surgery didn’t show much I was experiencing severe symptoms of Endometriosis. Dr Khazali was willing to help and I just can’t still believe 8weeks post surgery how much my everyday life has improved!! I have my diagnosis but most of all I don’t remember the last time I felt as good as I feel today and it is all thanks to him.

After 20 years of suffering with endometriosis I saw Mr Khazali. Prior to the appointment he asked for me to send through correspondence from previous consultants and he had clearly read it all prior to seeing me. This had never happened before and I usually spent a lot of previous appts explaining the history of my condition so it was refreshing change. He was very sympathetic to my condition and provided options for a way forward. On the day of my surgery he thoroughly explained everything that was going to happen, after the surgery he went through the procedure. He was always very clear in his explanations making sure I understood what was happening. I'm very happy with the treatment i received.

I travelled from the West Midlands especially to have a procedure under Mr Khazali’s care. His surgical team and nursing team on the ward were amazing in both, their pre-op and post-op care. Mr Khazali coordinated all aspects of my care in an efficient and organised way. I was really impressed with the care he provided and the way he organised my procedure. I’m very grateful for everything he has done for me thus far in my endometriosis journey.

Mr Khazali has completely changed my life around! My initial appointment left me having confidence in his plan and very informed with the process and understanding of my diagnosis. He is happy to take time answering questions and his skill and expertise is demonstrated through out. My surgery was a smooth process and healed well. My post operation appointment I was provided very in-depth knowledge on the findings.

Explanation

Before I met Mr Khazali, I had surgery for endometriosis in 2010 with another gynaecologist in London where he excised recto-vaginal endometriosis which had been causing me excruciating pain for years. The pain went away but I then had surgery for adhesions in 2013 for some dull pulling pain that developed. Soon after this surgery, I got married and got pregnant in 2014. I was still pain free and had another baby in 2017. However, in August 2020, I started to get the excruciating bowel pain again and would be in debilitating pain a few days before my period and during my period. I would get diarrhoea and bowel pain during my period. For the rest of the month, I would be extremely constipated (something I've never suffered with before). The constipation was very worrying for me. There were days I would just eat fresh fruits, salads etc and still couldn't go. I stopped eating regular foods and started losing a lot of weight (I looked gaunt). This debilitating pain and constipation went on for almost 2 years (during covid and lockdown). I then decided to have a consultation with my previous gynaecologist who recommended an MRI. The MRI found a 30mm x 16mm nodule in my colon with deep muscularis thickening. The gynaecologist said it wasn't a good idea to do surgery for this as it would require a bowel resection and he suggested that I go on the pill to manage the symptoms. I tried this for a few weeks, but it gave me very low mood. I then decided to do some research and found Mr Shaheen Khazali! What I liked about him is that he has a team of collective experts for different organs where the endo may penetrate (in my case the bowel). 3 weeks after finding Mr Khazali, I had an online consultation with him (as I live in Africa) and he explained that I may need a disc resection or a segmental bowel resection. He said it was likely that it would be a segmental bowel resection due to the size of the nodule. He explained that I had a small chance of ending up with an ileostomy, but it was rare in his practice. He then put me in touch with his colo-rectal surgeon Dr Nisar Pasha on Zoom who was also fantastic. I flew to London 3 weeks later and had my surgery 3 days after landing in the UK. I ended up having a full bowel resection (4 hours long) and stayed 3 nights at the Lister Hospital (first night in High Dependency). I was released to go home after my first bowel movement. Once at home, I was only taking paracetamol for pain relief as the pain wasn't too bad. Ten days post surgery, the pain eased up however the bowel movements became very frequent (about 15 x a day). However, it is now 2 months post surgery and the bowel movements have settled. I flew back to Africa 4 weeks post surgery and took an aspirin before flying and wore DVT socks to prevent the risk of clots. In terms of pain, I no longer get that excruciating bowel pain with my period and I no longer have to take pain killers with my period. I know it is a bit early to say, but I'm hopeful that in the next few months, my bowel movements will be fully settled. I am grateful for finding such a skilled surgeon in Mr Khazali. Him and Mr Pasha Nisar carried out a very technical and difficult surgery on me and it coudn't have gone any better. Thank you Mr Khazali for everything!

I finally consulted Mr Khazali after an exhausting, expensive and lengthy search to find out what was wrong with me. I had suspected endometriosis and problems with my pelvic nerves. To anyone reading this, I can thoroughly recommend Mr Khazali. In addition, an even more distinguished recommendation came from the surgeon who recommended him to me, Mr Christian Barnick. Although Mr Branick also carries out endometriosis surgery, his reason for referring me was Mr Khazali’s expertise in dealing with pelvic nerve issues. Mr Khazali’s approach to understanding my issues and coming to the ultimate diagnosis suited me perfectly. He allowed me initially to do much of the talking and examined me internally, which some other clinicians had omitted to do. He carefully and methodically explained what he believed the issues where and what my choice of treatments were. In addition, Mr Khazali took on board all the notes I had prepared and appeared to remember everything I had told him perfectly at the second consultation. I believe Mr Khazali has excelled in his area of medical health, not only due to his specialist knowledge of pelvic nerves, but also he clearly has a scientific mind and passion for getting to the root cause of problems, as well as planning the best solutions. In addition, to his scientific skills I believe Mr Khazali’s ability to listen is what sets him above the many other clinicians I consulted and leads him to the answers quickly. That resonated with me as I adopt a similar approach in my profession as a building surveyor. At university, before an assignment, we used to be given a model answer. I would like the Medical Community in the UK to know that, in my view, from a patient’s perspective Mr Khazali’s approach is a ‘Model Answer’. My operation is thought to have removed all the endometriosis with little chance of it reoccurring. My irritated and partially entrapped pudendal nerve was also treated, and the associated pain has noticeably decreased since. I am now in week 5 post op. I have no abdominal pain. Also, although I’m no longer taking progesterone there is no heavy bleeding. Thank goodness, as I found progesterone left me feeling fatigued and possibly contributed to weight gain. I also believe the endometriosis was contributing to my fatigue, so it’s a relief to hear it’s unlikely to come back. I have been out cycling today and am able to sit on the saddle without the pain. Pre the op I had to sit at my desk perched on one buttock and pre op. the three times I tried to cycle I had to do the same, to avoid aggravating the pain. I am still being careful though as my genitals are still a little tender. I’m currently taking a low dose of Pregabalin and Celecoxib, but my aim now is to stop this as soon as possible, hopefully in a weeks’ time and then, fingers crossed, I can enjoy a medication free period in my life. I’m 61 and my case was somewhat unusual as the endometriosis was discovered two years after a hysterectomy. I had been taking estrogen, in all its different forms, prior to the discovery of the endometriosis. This was because, a whole variety of medical professionals had told me taking estrogen would reduce the risk of UTI’s (bladder infections). I had two to three UTI’s a year, usually after sex. The estrogen, taken with progesterone, appeared to have very little effect on reducing the UTI’s. To make matters worse I was told by the hysterectomy surgeon I could take the estrogen after the hysterectomy without progesterone. I now believe the lack of progesterone to control the estrogen fueled the growth of the endometriosis. As a layperson my warning to other women is to be very cautious about taking estrogen without a blood test first to evaluate the levels of hormones in your body. Also, even after having the hysterectomy and subsequently having my cervix removed by Mr Khazali, he advised, that if ever I take estrogen again, I should also take progesterone again, in case of any remaining unidentified endometriosis. Despite being early days, in anticipation of continued pain relief, I would like to extend my sincere gratitude to Mr Khazali for his help. I would also like to say thank you to Ben Mondelli who gave me his time before the op and assisted with the operation. I would also like to thank Leandri, my support nurse who was very supportive and available to answer queries adding a female perspective. And thankyou also to the office team and their quick responses, vital for anyone suffering pain. Good luck to any other sufferers reading this.

I am sharing this to hopefully prevent other women from receiving the same negative and emotionally draining treatment that I encountered from Mr. Shaheen Khazali at The Lister Hospital in London. During my post-op appointment with Mr. Shaheen Khazali. My entire experience from beginning to end was demeaning and left me with many unanswered questions. Post-op the doctor was not available to address any of my concerns regarding the burning pain I was in and continue to experience. On the advice of his team, over the course of the next six weeks, I made repeated visits to Lister's urgent care (each visit costing me over £200 each time) as they advised they were not competent to support me. The final straw was during my six weeks post-op consultation, where his demeanour was very superior, sarcastic and extremely incompassionate. He did not address my questions that I had furnished him prior to our meeting and spent the vast majority of our short consultation dictating notes into his phone. Knowing that I was in pain for the entire six weeks, I was left flabbergasted that there was only a cursory physical exam and no review of my histology report. He kept saying weren't you in pain before your surgery-- yes I was and that is why I came to him to have surgery to reduce my pain. I left this meeting shaken and in tears and went directly to urgent care in the same hospital for further support and answers since the doctor was unwilling to discuss my case any further and he had summarily dismissed me. The urgent care team at Lister then referred me to another gynaecologist that same day who reviewed my histology report, ran blood tests, and carried out a CT scan. Seeing the other gynaecologist was like night and day in comparison to Mr. Khazali. Being an internationally renowned expert in your subject, and a brilliant surgeon is not all that matters in being a good doctor, overall patient care is as important! Having the ability to clearly explain your diagnosis to the patient is critical for a positive relationship.
