    About

I qualified from Leeds University Medical School in 1984 and trained in Obstetrics and Gynaecology in Yorkshire. I took up my Consultant post at Darent Valley Hospital in 2000.

    • Gynaecological cancer.
    • The treatment of heavy/ painful periods using minimally invasive surgery.
    • Minimal access surgery (keyhole surgery).
    • Vulval conditions

At Darent Valley Hospital I am the lead Gynaecologist for Urogynaecology and Gynaecological Cancer.

I offer a wide range of surgery for incontinence and prolapse including:

Always friendly and helpful, explains everything well and in an easy to understand manner. Never seemed to be in a hurry and was happy to listen to any concerns and answer questions, however ridiculous they were :-) It's nice to feel at easy and confident about the ability of the surgeon when going into surgery. I think it aids recovery and wellbeing. Would certainly recommend Mr McDermott to anyone.

I recently had an appointment with Dr MacDermott, I was very anxious and embarrassed about my problem, he however immediately put me at ease and performed the inspection and swab taking swiftly. He also throughly explained everything without rushing or dismissing my concerns. I'm much better now and back to "normal", thank you.

    Patient seen for:
It was clear to me, from my initial consultation, through to my final one, that Mr MacDermott would listen to my concerns in a supportive and understanding way. Thanks to his patient explanations, I understood my situation a lot better, which enabled me to make informed decisions. None of my appointments felt rushed and he made me feel that I could ask any question, without fear that it may seem insignificant. After battling for two years, not only with the physical symptoms I was experiencing, but also with the weight of expectation I placed on myself, that I should just 'get on with it', the sense of relief I experienced was overwhelming, that because of Mr MacDermott's care I could feel that my situation was valid and that it was taken seriously. After the surgery, Mr MacDermott explained the ways in which the operation was more complicated than he had anticipated, so it was reassuring to know that I had consented to have this operation under the care of someone with such skill and experience. I will be forever grateful to him.

I have come to see Dr MacDermott for consultation about my condition and standard scan revealed the need for minor surgery. My pre-surgery consultation was very informative and post-surgery response fast and clear. Thank you for everything.
