    About

Mr Richard Sinnerton is an Orthopaedic Surgeon specialising in shoulder, elbow and simple hand conditions. He trained as a doctor at St. Thomas' Hospital, where he started in 1983. His speciality training in orthopaedics was based at St. Mary’s Hospital in London and he became a consultant in 1998. His interest in shoulder surgery came about through meeting and working with Professor Pascal Boileau, widely recognised as one of the world's leading shoulder experts. Mr. Sinnerton spent a year as his Fellow in Nice in 1996. Following his return to the UK, he was appointed as a consultant at Ashford/St. Peters Hospital where he set up the very successful Upper Limb Unit. He now works full-time as an independent surgeon seeing both private and NHS patients.

Mr Sinnerton treats all conditions of the shoulder amd elbow and simple hand conditions whether caused by accident or over-use, through a sporting injury or arthritic and congenital problems. He selects the best of the new medical technologies to use along side tried and tested traditional techniques to provide the best tailored answer for each individual's concerns. His belief is that most patients, once diagnosed, only need time, rehabilitation and medication, surgery being required only if the symptoms recur.

He has developed a national and international reputation for using Reverse Geometry Shoulder Replacements to treat some of the most complex and disabling shoulder problems for which, until a few years ago, there was no solution. He teaches other surgeons this technique and recently was invited by the leading orthopaedic journal to write the definitive article on shoulder replacement.

He works very closely with selected specialist theatre nurses, anaesthetists and physiotherapists to ensure that the patient is looked after from their first visit through to their return to full and pain free function.

Mr Sinnerton diagnosed my issue within minutes of me explaining my symptoms; something which had eluded others for nearly five years. His explanation of the problem, solution and recovery were clear and concise. I liked his direct approach, no-nonsense manner and his humour. I felt confident in his expert care, and with good reason.

I was expecting a steroid injection but Mr Sinnerton pushed me to have surgery which was absolutely the right thing. The x-ray and MRI totally missed a lump of calcium stuck in my shoulder muscle which Richard found and removed during surgery. His diagnosis of my arm after MRI was ‘manky’ which whilst informally fun, I need a slightly more medical explanation, which he provided admittedly. Arm recovering very quickly now and so glad I chose Richard.

    Frozen Shoulder
This man is a the very best in his profession. I had been suffering for at least 6 months with a frozen shoulder which was making my life a misery. Within a few weeks of visiting Mr Sinnerton and having treatment with a Hydrodistension injection I am pleased to say I am well on my way to normality. Very Impressed with the treatment and his website which accurately documents the condition and treatment options.

Mr Sinnerton was highly recommended to me and it proved to be fully justified. From the onset his communication was prompt, clear, immensely helpful and interspersed with his great sense of humour which I appreciated. The intricacies of my right shoulder replacement were added to by my nickel allergy, however, that was accommodated without unnecessary delay or worry for me. The team at Princess Margaret Hospital, Windsor was superb during my stay for surgery and for the follow-up physiotherapy. Throughout the whole process, Wendy, Mr Sinnerton’s secretary, underpinned arrangements with her admirable efficiency and helpful manner. Six months later I have full use of my right shoulder and have returned to my very active life including my much loved trekking. Gone is the 24/7 pain and lack of sleep. I am immensely grateful. Mr Sinnerton is a credit to the medical profession.

Richard is a class act, extremely experienced and one of the best around. It was the first time in my life to be on the operating table so was naturally a little nervous. Richard is super knowledgeable, confidence inspiring and he and his team are warm, friendly and calming.

This splendid no-nonsense surgeon treated me as an equal human being with respect but no signs of condescension. Straightforward, to the point, explained what needed to be explained and with good humour. I suppose more to the point the operation was a great success and I couldn't be more pleased with the result. Totally excellent.
