Practices worked at
After graduating medical school in 1991 I spent three years training in clinical endocrinology, before moving to the UK and obtaining a PhD in endocrine surgery from Bristol University in 1998. I completed all surgical training in the UK working as a Lecturer in Surgery at Bristol University and Fellow in Endocrine Surgery in Oxford. In 2007 I was appointed Consultant Endocrine Surgeon at the Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.
My clinical work is centred on thyroid, parathyroid and adrenal surgery with an annual workload of over 300 cases. I have developed the largest practice for open radical adrenalectomy for adrenocortical cancer and to date I performed over 350 laparoscopic and retroperitoneoscopic adrenal operations for benign adrenal tumours and metastatic disease.
Though adult operations represents the vast majority of my work, I see regularly children who need thyroid or parathyroid operations and I have an interest in familial endocrine diseases (MEN-1 and MEN-2 syndromes).
In parallel with the endocrine work, I remain involved in emergency general surgery and perform elective surgery for gallstone disease (laparoscopic cholecystectomy) and open hernia repairs.
I have a strong commitment to postgraduate education and I am regularly invited to teach student, postgraduate doctors and surgical trainees. For the last eight years I have been an examiner for the European Fellowship in Endocrine Surgery.
I have a strong interest in clinical research and in 2005 I was nominated Hunterian Professor of Surgery by the Royal College of Surgeons. I was Director of Research in the British Association of Endocrine Surgeons and European Society of Endocrine Surgeons (2012-2017) and currently I hold this position for the European Society of Endocrine Surgeons. I am the co-author of the European guidelines for the treatment of adrenocortical cancer and for the use of neuromonitoring in thyroid surgery.
To date I wrote over 70 journal publications, 40 book chapters (details on www.radumihai.info) and I delivered over 90 invited presentations at national and international conferences. Currently I am principal investigator for a multicentre study of voice outcomes after thyroid surgery (www.thyvoice.org.uk).

I was very fortunate to have my total thyroidectomy performed by Dr. Mihai. I am extremely happy with the results of my operation with minimal scarring and a short recovery period. Dr. Mihai was friendly, open and honest with me and did an exceptionally good job. Thank you very much to Dr. Mihai for the successful operation. I would highly recommend Mr. Mihai.
HE WAS VERY CLEAR ABOUT WHAT THE SURGERY INVOLVED AND THIS WAS PERFORMED WITHOUT ANY ISSUES AND ON SCHEDULE. RECOVERY WAS EXACTLY AS EXPLAINED AND EXPECTED. MANOR STAFF WERE ALSO VERY HELPFUL AND PROFESSIONAL. 5*.
The pre surgical preparation was meticulous and the surgery was absolutely trouble free. Very pleased overall.
Excellent in every area, thank you so much for a successful operation
Very professional, knowledgeable and clear in advice/ explanation
Mr Mihai explained the whole process in a very clear way and made sure that I fully understood my condition and the procedure that followed. His manner was very caring and I felt very comfortable discussing my condition with him. The aftercare was excellent and I would highly recommend Mr Mihai.
I was very fortunate to have my recent surgery performed by Mr Mihail. He is an excellent and highly skilled surgeon. I was grateful for his advice regarding both the procedure Itself and after care and I would not hesitate to recommend him to others.
Mr Mihai is undoubtably a very skilled and very competent surgeon who helped me with my gallstones. He saw me without delay and arranged surgery very quickly. He was willing to undertake key hole surgery despite my extra bmi meaning the surgery was more difficult and not without risk. I felt completely reassured and safe in Mr Mihai’s care. Post operatively Mr Mihai visited me several times whilst in hospital and explained very carefully the procedures he had undertaken and what I needed to do during recovery to ensure a good outcome. Mr Mihai has gone the extra mile to help me.
Confidence inspiring, thorough, articulate and sincere. Extremely impressed.
I cannot fault the whole experience from beginning to end. It was painless in every sense.
Very detailed and personalised service. The reception staff at the hospital are not generally friendly however I was extremely satisfied with my experience with Dr Mihai and the nursing staff.
Mr Mihai explains things clearly and visually by drawing. He has humour, builds rapport and puts you at ease. I felt confident in his hands.
The experience was first class in every respect.
Mr Radu Mihai is very easy to talk to, he listens well and clearly explains the procedure. He comes across as very knowledgeable and professional and is obviously a very experienced surgeon. Highly Recommended.
A first class experience.
Mr Mihai explains everything very clearly. He takes his time and focusses on you as the patient. I feel confident in him performing my operation and providing me with appropriate care
Mr Radu Mihai put me at ease as soon as I met him. He understands the debilitating symptoms of this condition fully. He explained the procedure and I had full confidence in him. Delighted to report that my Parathyroidectomy was a success. I would highly recommend him to anyone suffering from Hyperparathyroidism.
Very good throughout.
From initial contact through to surgery I have only praise for the empathy and professionalism of Mr Mihai. My post op recovery has been uneventful and I found it to be more comfortable than I was expecting.
From the moment I met Mr Mihai he put me at ease. Explained what and why my condition had occurred and what he was going to do to Correct it. He was amazing and I am very grateful.
