About
Professor Brownson studied at Liverpool University and qualified in 1986 (MB ChB).
In 1992 he undertook a period of full-time research at Nottingham University culminating in the submission of his thesis “A Biomechanical Evaluation of the Crash Brace Position” and the award of a DM. He remains actively involved in aircraft passenger safety research and he is a founder member of the International Board for Research into Aircraft Crash Events (IBRACE).
In 1998 he was appointed as a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon in Liverpool where he was instrumental in establishing the Liverpool Upper Limb Unit as a centre of excellence for shoulder and elbow surgery.
He is recognised for his expertise in arthroscopic shoulder surgery and is regularly invited to lecture and carry out live surgical demonstrations at courses across Europe and the United States.
He is a member of the Arthroscopy Association of North America (AANA) and the European Society for Shoulder and Elbow Surgery (SECEC). He is a corresponding member of the American Shoulder and Elbow Society (ASES) and an honorary lifetime member of the Shoulder and Elbow Society, India (SESI).
In his clinical practice, he treats a significant number of elite athletes including players from 10 Premiership football teams and he was the upper limb surgeon to Liverpool Football Club from 2000 to 2017.
Professor Brownson is actively involved in clinical research and has published over 20 papers relating to shoulder and elbow surgery, as well as being a co-author for six sets of National (BOA/BESS) Care Pathways.
In 2012 he was elected a member of Council for the British Elbow and Shoulder Society (BESS) and he was elected President of the Society 2017-2019.
He is an Honorary Clinical Professor at the University of Liverpool
