About
Mr Matthew Sala, Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon, currently works within the Northwick Park & Central Middlesex Hospitals. He is highly experienced in treating conditions of the shoulder, elbow, wrist, hand and knee. Conditions including joint, muscle and tendon pathology, complex fractures, sport and soft tissue injuries.
Mr Sala began his medical education in Liverpool at the University of Liverpool Medical School, before moving on to do specialist training in the North Thames Rotation. He did his specialist training in hospitals across London including University College Hospital, St Mary’s Paddington, Hammersmith and Charing Cross Hospitals. Following this, he was awarded a fellowship at the University of Toronto. He has also been around the world as a visiting surgeon working in prestigious units including the Hand Unit in Ontario, Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, and the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York City. He was later appointed to his current position in 2000 and was given the position of Clinical Lead for Shoulder Surgery. A year later, his expertise was recognised when Imperial College School of Medicine appointed him Honorary Senior Lecturer. the Royal College of Surgeons have also appointed his as a Fellow
Mr Sala has pioneered the use of collagen scaffold and inflatable spacer implants in his unit, using this technique as part of a national collaborative study. He performs 90% of his procedures via arthroscopic surgery. He continues to work collaboratively, working alongside anaesthetists and specialised physiotherapists in London. He is also an active educator engaging with advanced surgeon training.
