“Hip surgery is not a walk in the park but having had hip replacement on both sides I would not wish to choose anyone else. His attention to you as a patient is first class. I have always been made to feel at ease with the whole procedure and he has been very clear about what to expect. My sincere thanks. “

    About

Mr Burwell is a consultant orthopaedic surgeon at Circle Bath, Royal United Hospital Bath and in addition holds an honorary consultant appointment at the Royal National Hospital for Rheumatic Diseases in Bath where he runs the specialist hip clinic. He specialises in adult hip reconstruction including primary and revision hip replacement and hip resurfacing.

He graduated from the University of London in 1988 and undertook specialist surgical training in orthopaedics and trauma on the North West Thames Rotation based at the Royal Chelsea and Westminster Hospital. He completed his final year of training at the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital at Stanmore. For further development, he went to the University of South Australia and received advanced adult hip reconstruction as the arthroplasty fellow to Professor Don Howie.

Mr Burwell has developed a large expertise in all forms of adult hip reconstruction and joint replacement including the use of cemented and un-cemented hip replacement implants and modern materials such as metal and ceramic bearings. Mr Burwell continues with a trauma practice at the Royal United Hospital, in particular specialising in surgery for complex fractures of the hip and for fractures around previous hip replacements implants (i.e. peri-prosthetic fractures).

He is highly interested in research and currently involved with a british orthopaedic company in the development of a novel type of hip implant for use in younger and more active patients. With the same company, one of a group of surgeons involved in early clinical trial of a new bearing surface, which will wear less and lead to an increase in the longevity of hip replacements and reduce the need for 're-do' revision surgery.

Heartfelt thanks for waving your magic wand (called surgery)! I intend to keep myself as fit and healthy as possible, so as not to squander the pain free gift of my new hip! I hope to that at a later date I should require similar surgery on my right hip, I shall be fortunate enough to return to you and your team at Circle.

Dear Mr Burwell, This is just a short note as I wasn't able to see you personally. I wanted to thank you directly for the procedure that you carried out so successfully. It was interesting when your colleague consultant was reviewing the "after" X-Ray and was heard to exclaim "what a brilliant job Mr Burwell has done for you". Whilst I obviously don't have that same degree of expertise, I fully agree and thought it only fair that I would write to thank you for your skill, advice, efficiency and reassurance.
