“I consulted Mr Haendlmayer because of severe pain in both heels; his diagnosis was plantar fasciitis. We talked through exercises I should try as well as thorough explanation of the condition, how to prevent and/ or manage it. Happy to report I am now almost pain free, would highly recommend.“

    About

I graduated from Medical School in Berlin/Germany in 1991. In 1997 I came to the UK to continue my junior doctor training in surgical specialties and later as specialist Orthopaedic Surgeon in the Yorkshire and Humber Deanery. I completed a Fellowship in Foot & Ankle Surgery in Leeds teaching Hospitals with Professor Nick Harris in 2010 before I was appointed Consultant with special interest Foot & Ankle surgery in Mid Yorkshire Hospitals NHS Trust in February 2010 where I am now the lead Foot & Ankle Surgeon since 2013.

I have special interests in Sports Injuries and Neuro-Muscular Foot Deformity Correction.

From January 2019 I also trained as Health Coach and became certified in January 2020 with special interest in sleep, relaxation, stress relief, gut health, weight loss, brain health, type 2 diabetes and habit changes for other chronic diseases.

    Diseases, Medical Tests and Treatments

Cartiva Synthetic cartilage implant for Hallux rigidus

Hallux Metatarsal-Phalangeal joint fusion for Hallux rigidus with osteoarthritis

    Midfoot fusions for osteoarthritis

Complex foot reconstructions for chronic neuro-muscular foot deformity follwing stroke and other neurological injuries

I have a special interest in neuro-muscular foot deformity correction, including the typical fixed foot flexion deformities after stroke, traumatic brain injury, spinal injury or other adult neurological injury resulting in foot deformity. The affected patients often have years of disability without access to surgical correction in their area. In that capacity I started a multi-disciplinary neuro-muscular Foot deformity clinic in 2018 at Mid Yorkshire NHS Trust and with this expertise, I also see patients in the private sector. Surgery for these severe foot deformities is aimed for pain relief, improve mobility, reduce the need for splints and other orthotics, reduce the need for Botox injections in spasticity and overall reduces the carer burden.

I was referred To Mr Haendlmayor by my GP, I had been suffering pain in my left big toe joint for quite a long time. Mr Haendlmayor explained to me that my condition was called - Hallux Rigidus and that I needed a procedure which he described as - Cartiva Synthetic Cartilage implant with Cheilectomy. (he wrote it down for me). Throughout the consultation & the subsequent operation He was polite and informative, answering any questions that I asked. I would describe my experience as a patient of Mr Haendlmayor as reassuring and stress free with an excellent outcome. I would have no hesitation in recommending or consulting with Mr Haendlmayor in the future

From my first consultation to my follow-up consultation I have felt completely safe with Mr Haendlmayer. He was very warm and friendly on our first meeting which is really important to me, he also talked me through my options and what I should expect with the results giving no false promises and explaining any complications that could arise. I have to say the results have exceeded my expectations and I highly recommend him. Thank you!

Foot & Ankle Surgery Ligament Injury Ankle Arthroscopy
Following a fall in September 2019 I was left with ankle instability with a ligament rupture. After months of physio it was decided the best course of action was for me to have an ankle arthroscopy and lateral ankle ligament reconstruction with internal brace. The operation was clearly explained to me and I felt very comfortable going into surgery following consultations with Mr Haendlmayer. I am 13 weeks post surgery and my ankle has healed really well and feels strong. It was the best decision for me to go ahead with the surgery and I would thoroughly recommend Mr Haendlmayer.

I have had nothing short of a positive experience with Mr Haendlmayer. He is professional, knowledgeable and extremely affable; also made sure to take the time and make sure that complexity was explained in a way that was very easy to understand. My local hospital closed earlier this year because of Covid complications, but Mr Haendlmayer went out of his way to make sure that he was able to support me and keep me up to date remotely - even performing my surgery at another hospital so as not to delay things further. I would not hesitate to offer him my highest recommendation. Thank you for fixing my ankle!
