Mr Poskitt is a consultant general and vascular surgeon in Gloucestershire with over 30 years experience, specialising in venous disorders and local anaesthetic & laparoscopic hernia repairs.

Having introduced laparoscopic (keyhole) surgery to Cheltenham for hyperhidrosis (excess sweating) & gallbladder surgery, he subsequently introduced keyhole surgery for hernia & varicose vein treatment to Cheltenham. He now offers minimally invasive laparoscopic hernia surgery & both duplex guided foam sclerotherapy & radiofrequency ablation (RFA) for varicose veins.

Surgical Experience

Over the last 15 years, he has performed over 2,500 keyhole laparoscopic and 1,000 open procedures for all types of herniae including inguinal, femoral, obturator, spigelian, incisional and recurrent paraumbilical. Over a similar period, he has performed several thousand minimally invasive vein procedures (Foam and RFA) for patients with varicose veins & venous leg ulcers.

Patients require an individual assessment to have a bespoke treatment plan.

Some patients with a hernia may not require surgery & can be treated conservatively. Others may require a procedure under local anaesthesia to reduce surgical risk & those fit for general anaesthesia would be offered keyhole (laparoscopic) procedure as a quality option.

Patients with venous disease (varicose veins or leg ulcers) deserve an individual clinical assessment & a non invasive duplex assessment to formulate a management plan. Mr Poskitt established a Leg Ulcer Service in Gloucestershire & offers an accurate assessment to identify & treat the cause (most commonly leaking vein valves).

Research

Mr Poskitt qualified from the Univerity of Sheffield in 1977 & worked in Sheffield until 1982. He then moved to the Professorial Unit at Charing Cross Hospital where he developed a research interest while working on his MD thesis. He completed his specialist training in Bristol & appointed as a consultant surgeon at Cheltenham in 1989.

He has maintained a research interest & has supervised a large number of trainee surgeons, nursing staff & vascular scientists. He has also overseen a large number of MD Doctoral theses & has personally published over 130 publications.

He recently played a key role in defining the management of severe venous disorders (ESCHAR paper Lancet 2012 & EVRA paper New England Journal of Medicine 2018). He has published and presented research on TEP hernia repairs demonstrating the cost benefit & advantages of keyhole surgery in inguinal hernia repair (BMJ 2011). Mr Poskitt has also presented & published widely on open and laparoscopic abdominal aortic aneurysm surgery & the positive effect of hyperhidrosis treatment on the quality of life.
