From the outset, I had great confidence in Giles. He was recommended by a friend with similar sporting interests and past history, and was a very satisfied patient 5 years on. I was pleased with my decision for bilateral surgery and found that the experience was simply not a drama at all. Giles was immediately on hand for a misplaced scary post-op moment, providing a simple explanation and reassurance. At all stages, I felt that he really cares about doing the best that he possibly can in every respect and that patient satisfaction is his ultimate reward. I am delighted to be ranked as an extremely satisfied patient and have no hesitation in recommending Giles to others. For me, I found myself walking unaided a little over two weeks after surgery and the predicted rehab period is simply flying by. Thank YOU Giles!
Having seen a number of consultants, Giles Stafford is like a breath of fresh air: an obvious expert in his field who is open, approachable and with the ability to explain things to a layman without being condescending!
Giles was great from start to finish. Operation went as he expected and recovery has gone well!
Absolutely first class. Cancelled my follow up appointment 1 year on...it was that good !
Mr Stafford is an excellent surgeon who takes care to understand what his patients wish to achieve from their hip surgery. His follow up and advice has been very clear and I am really enjoying being able to fully participate in sport once more.
An all round superior experience that exceeded my expectations in every sense. Great explanation and updates before, during and after the operation.
A brilliant experience. Giles and his team have been instrumental in helping my hips to full recovery. Having suffered from a labral tear on both of my hips I was in quite a lot of pain, which was starting to progress and become worse. Giles arranged for me to have numerous scans and tests, all of which were promptly arranged to suit my work schedule. On receipt of the diagnosis, Giles explained what a hip arthroscopy entailed and gave me a copy of his “Helpful Hip” guide to give me a deeper insight into the procedure. He thoroughly explained the findings of my CT and MRI scan and was more than happy to answer my questions and concerns. Prior to this injury, I had never undergone surgery, therefore I was rather apprehensive about having two surgeries within the space of a few months. Once again, Giles provided his reassurance and got the ball rolling. The first hip arthroscopy went incredibly well, so much so I had the second procedure carried out on the other hip a month later. Presently, I am roughly 8 months into my recovery programme, and I have made an incredible amount of progress. Now, I am back on my bike, exercising and walking for miles – it feels great. Giles is confident, has a great demeanour, exceptional bedside manner and most importantly – he cares. He and his team have been with me throughout my road to recovery – they’re always happy to assist. I am incredibly grateful to Giles for helping these once were miserable hips – they’re happy now. I would happily recommend those with troubled hips to see Giles. A big thanks to all!
From initial consultation to surgery and follow-up consultations, I found Mr Stafford to be professional, courteous and efficient throughout. It's now 15 weeks since my operation and i've been pleasantly surprised at the ease of recovery, lack of pain and range of movement I now have with my hip. I would certainly recommend Mr Stafford for anyone contemplating hip surgery.
What a great team, they made the whole experience faultless. I’m so pleased with the outcome and my recovery time. Within 3 months I’d forgotten I’d had my hip replaced. Is it wrong to say I can’t wait to have the next one done?! Thank you.
The whole experience was absolutely superb from start to finish. I cannot recommend Giles and his team highly enough. Everything was explained simply and perfectly prior to the operation which i found really reassuring, the execution of the operation was excellent along with the after care.
Having suffered from a Labral tear and in considerable pain, I had an Arthroscopy Procedure (not with Giles). This procedure failed (return of pain and limited movement) and the consultant basically told me to go away and come back in a year for a replacement hip. As a Skier to a very high standard, I was not satisfied with this answer. Another skier who had a procedure with Giles recommended him. The experience with Giles was like night and day. He has a team of Doctors and Anaesthetists who work with him all the time and there clearly is a well established working relationship that exists between them all. As well as meeting all of his team and discussing the way forward, I had a series of Scans from which was produced a three dimensional moving representation of the affected joint from which he worked to accurately apply a resolution to my problem. Giles said that there was absolutely no requirement for a Hip replacement! Giles has produced a 50 page, comprehensive "Helpful Hip Handbook" the like of which I have never seen before. This covers not only the actual procedure but also diet and exercise prior to the operation, healing and relaxation therapy, prior and post op exercise and goal setting. These are just a few examples of the contents. Post Op. the two operations could not be more different. Very little pain (and that was only during the first few days after the operation), this pain has reduced to almost nil and my range of movement is exceptional after just a few weeks. I am looking forward to the next Ski season with confidence. I cannot recommend Giles more highly.
Extremely professional from beginning to end. Procedure explanations were clear and forthright. Very reassuring and provided confidence throughout.
From start to finish, my experience under Mr Stafford's care was nothing but positive. My appointments took place when scheduled, Mr Stafford did a very thorough assessment of my symptoms, along with various scans to confirm my labral tear. This was successfully repaired and after following the very helpful rehabilitation programme provided by Mr Stafford, i am pleased to say that 6 months post-op, i am back lifting weights in the gym and i am going from strength to strength, with additional knowledge gained from the rehabilitation programme.
Giles has a great bedside manner, is caring and understanding of the situation. I felt I was in a great pair of hands
I have been a patient of Mr Stafford for 5 years. I find him an excellent consultant. He is kind, explains carefully, takes time, provides all options and does not pressure towards surgery unless necessary. I had a very successful full hip replacement recently and having a consultant you trust and you know is top of his game made the whole procedd so much easier. I would fully recommend Mr Stafford.
All went very well. Not so happy with the night nurses at the Wellington and the air conditioning but the food was good! Will definitely go back to Mr Stafford for my second hip replacement and have recommended him to others.
Giles Stafford is an excellent surgeon. From the first consultation right through to the post operative care and checks I have found him to be highly professional, very approachable and incredibly patient. My recovery has been brilliant. He explained my diagnosis clearly and the options which were available to me. Being a first time surgical patient, he was attuned to my nervousness and very kindly made extra time to see me and answer a thousand questions! I was very reassured by this patient-centred approach which prepared me thoroughly. His attention to detail, superb skill and insistence on100% accuracy through the planning OPS process means that my hip replacement has been perfect. He has enormous amounts of energy and is always positive and upbeat. I was very reassured by his continual monitoring of my progress in the weeks and months after my operation. He has an innovative approach to recovery which has meant that my return to “normal” life and activities has been faster than I could ever have imagined possible – 7 weeks post op and I was swimming in the sea off southern Italy! Looking back now (4 months post op) I am amazed at how pain free the process has been – Giles uses very effective focused pain relief - and my lack of bruising was testament to Giles’ skill and talent. I often forget I even have a hip replacement! When Giles is your surgeon, you are also in the care of a fantastic team – a great anaethestist, amazing physiotherapists (I never dreamt that I would be doing glute bridges and on an exercise bike the day after surgery, but I did and it was fantastic) and the wonderful orthopedic nurse Sean who continues the brilliant aftercare by always being on the end of a phone and checking in to see how you are. The facilities in the Wellington Hospital are excellent (accommodation, gym, catering) and I am full of praise for the wonderful nursing care that I received, nothing was ever too much trouble. I can highly recommend Giles Stafford and if I should need to have my other hip replaced, then he is the only surgeon I would want to do it.
From the first time I met Mr Stafford (over 12 months ago), through to the surgery to replace my worn out hip 2 weeks ago, I have found his approach and professionalism to be exemplary. My Stafford allayed any concerns I had from the first appointment. He explained that there is a period of personal evaluation to ensure you are committed to the surgery and made it very clear that he would have attempted all other surgical methods possible to save my hip had it been possible. Armed with that advice, I carried on with life.. I’m an active outdoors person who loves cycling, swimming, hiking and hitting the gym hard 4 times a week. 9 months later after hiking / scrambling in the Lakes, I remembered an analogy Mr Stafford had used, that when you feel the window of what you can do comfortably is closing and your quality of life is affected, you arrive at the fact that it isn’t a decision to me made, rather that it is time to take action. After explaining scans to me in great detail, he explained that a bone conserving implant / replacement, using OPS technology to improve fit would be the best option. He made sure I understood all the risks (however rare) involved and that I was 100% comfortable with every aspect of the procedure, my immediate aftercare and recovery. On the day of surgery Mr Stafford again reviewed the procedure with me, followed by the anaesthetist. This truly couldn’t have been handled better, my heart rate under 60 immediately pre-op proving to me that I was relaxed and confident in Mr Stafford and the entire team at the Wellington. My surgery was fast (under 1 hour) and due to Mr Stafford’s skill and use of local anaesthesia I experienced little to negligible pain. He came to check around 1 hour post-surgery to give me his view on the procedure which in my case was very positive. An hour after that, physio started. Mr Stafford’s approach is to start the rehabilitation process as soon as possible. The morning after surgery I was walking with crutches and using a stationary bike. I was discharged 2 days post-surgery but not before Mr Stafford had again explained the results of the post-operative X rays, which again were very positive in my case. 11 days post discharge; I now look back on the process and understand I could not have been treated better. Mr Stafford runs a tight ship, he leads a team of dedicated experts that all share the same patient focussed mentality and provide support every minute you are under their care. In summary, if you have a problem with your hip and are contemplating “going to see someone”, I could not recommend Mr Giles Stafford more highly.
Throughout my procedure Mr Stafford remained thorough and professional. He answered all questions carefully, courteously and honestly which helped me feel confident that I was in 'good hands'. After my hip replacement Mr Stafford's positive approach empowered me to return to normal life quickly. He does not believe his patients should be prevented from assisting in their own recovery, by placing restrictions what they do. He was full of encouragement. His 'can do' attitude meant that I was out of bed a few hours post op, on an exercise bike and in the gym, assisted by physiotherapists. It was less than a week before I was walking without crutches. My whole experience has been positive and successful.
Great doc, he fixed me and made me run again.
First Class experience from Consultation to rehabilitation. Mr Stratford is the best Surgeon I have come across. Nothing is too much trouble and monitors your progress throughout your recovery. He has also taken into account employing a great team to work along side him. Caroline PA is extremely organised and nothing is too much trouble. Mr Stratford explains step by step procedure and is true to his word. My recovery was amazing, driving at 4 weeks and Crutch free in the house at week 3. Nearly back to all gym activities in week 8. Having previously had the other hip operated on 4 years ago the difference between the two operations is amazing my recovery this time is so much quicker. Now I can enjoy the rest of my life pain free thanks to Mr Stafford.
Excellent care from Mr Stafford and his team from the first consultation, through surgery to post-surgery follow-up. Each of the available options was clearly explained - including options Mr Stafford would not perform but for which he was prepared to provide a referral. Replacement of my other hip is likely and, if so, I will place myself under Mr Stafford's care.
Mr Stafford put me totally at ease. Everything was explained to me in a manner I could easily understand. I had total confidence in him. Operation went very smoothly. And four weeks in I feel so much better. I would have no hesitation in recommending Mr Stafford .
Fantastic Surgeon and genuinely friendly man, so refreshing to discuss your issues without feeling rushed out of the door, we talked about my case at length amongst other things. Very confident but realistic in what to expect. Results so far have been above and beyond. Explained everything he had done with images from the scope. Having had hip problems for 15 years and seeing so many specialist, I have leaned that seeing a specialist is not good enough, you have to see the top specialist and that is Mr Stafford. Could not recommend more highly
I was very apprehensive about the hip replacement operation. Mr Stafford was very reassuring and answered all my questions with a full explanation. He prepared me well for the operation. He was attentive during my stay in hospital and was again reassuring at my 2 week post op checkup. I have made a far quicker recovery than I could have possibly anticipated and am thrilled with the results of the operation. I am now at 6 weeks post op and able to drive, walk and do moderate exercise. Mr Stafford's approach to both the operation and aftercare is to be commended.
Calming, patient, reliable. Seems on the ball at all times
Everything was explained clearly and I always felt I was in the best most experienced hands.
Exceptionally professional and puts the patient first by making the procedure as non- invasive as possible and continually encourages and motivates. It is clear that Mr Stafford simply wishes the patient to return to normal life as quickly as possible as therefore does evertything he can to ensure this happens!
I was extremely nervous about the prospect of having to face up to reality and act on the chronic pain in my hip but Giles filled me with confidence every step of the way, right from the first consultation, exceptionally so during the operation itself, throughout the rehab period and still to this very day when he is always on hand for ad-hoc advice. Giles' knowledge, having been a keen sportsman himself (Rugby and Tennis), experience and empathy in addition to his incredible support team gives him an added edge to deliver first class results for any sports enthusiast. It is now 18 months post my operation and my hip has made a full recovery to the extent I can play a full range of sports again, exactly to the degree Giles initially described would be possible. Giles has already massively enhanced the quality of my life and dare I say of those around me (I am far less grumpy!) and at some point in the future I will need the same operation on the opposing hip. I will undoubtedly be seeking the services of Giles again, many many thanks.
I enjoyed a very clear and comprehensive explanation before , during and after my hip operations. After my second hip was replaced I recuperated surprisingly quickly spending less than two weeks using only one crutch( when the norm is four weeks) and being signed-off as fully fit after seven weeks. Mr Stafford's process for managing pain and rehabilitation has been extremely effective.
I was extremely privileged to have had Mr Stafford as my hip replacement surgeon. My husband still refer to the procedure as 'a miracle hip replacement surgery'!. Before my surgery, going about my daily life was extremely difficult. I couldn't sit at work ( I work at the hospital 12 hrs shift) , I daren't sit on the underground or bus! If I do, it could take up to 5 to 10 minutes to click the hip back in place!!!. I would leave the UK in the winter months November to March because the pain gets worse in the winter. This was very unhealthy for my marriage and my home! I had my surgery on the 4th of July 2017 (age 41) at the Wellington hospital. Two hours after my surgery, I knew immediately that I made the right decision to have Mr Stafford as my surgeon. I could sit up without any problem at all! The following morning, I took a walk to the Lord cricket ground gate on just one crutch! I was ready to take on the world! I was discharged from the hospital on the 7th of July 2017 and I stopped taking my 500mg × 2 paracetamol painkillers on the 15th of July 2017. I stopped using the crutch on the 22nd of July 2017. It's been two years since my operation , it's like I have been given a new lease of life because the hip replacement Is working so well.
I would like to recommend Mr Stafford without reservation to anyone with a hip issue. He has successfully seen me well on the road to recovery and drastically improved my quality of life. He quickly diagnosed the problem, gave me a choice of several options in terms of a surgery path and explained the expected time for rehab in a clear and understandable way. I felt in safe hands throughout both of my surgeries and always had full confidence in his ability to not only fix me, but also manage my expectations for the future. I am forever grateful to my physio for the initial referral to Mr Stafford and The Wellington Clinic.
I cannot praise Mr Stafford highly enough. My whole experience of his care from first consultation until post-operative check-ups was first class. He explained everything to do with my operation with patience and clarity. My hip replacement has been a complete success - I am now pain free and mobile. If and when my other hip requires replacement, I would have no hesitation in consulting him again!
Recovery from 2nd time around was much quicker due to increase in anti inflammatory post op. Wellington was bearable.
I came to Mr. Giles Stafford in poor health and great pain after suffering from a botched operation abroad. From the outset Mr. Stafford’s professionalism and sympathy put me at ease. A clear and comprehensive operation and recovery plan was set out. Mr. Stafford detailed every step of the procedure, which instilled a level of trust and confidence between Doctor and patient. The care and attention I received during my two operations was exemplary and directly contributed to my full recovery. Mr. Stafford and his team made sure every aspect of my recovery was addressed. Any question I had was answered quickly and diligently. I felt like my recovery was a priority for Mr. Stafford and his team, which I am truly grateful for as today I no longer suffer from pain and am fully recovered and once again enjoying life! Mr. Stafford is a true specialist who goes above and beyond to ensure his patients receive the care and attention that will ensure their full recovery.
